He didn’t remember much of his life before the search. What he did remember came from ghosts that whispered into his ears while their claws dug into his skin and from dreams he would wake from with blood trailing down his face and scars prickling with phantom pain. Perhaps he was better off not remembering—especially the faded face of a mother half forgotten whose smile soft with love only ever served to knife him in the chest. The first thing he could clearly recall was darkness. The next was the cold night chill that did little to sooth the ache in his body, and the sand shifting and scattering in the wind. He rose. Blood was thick in his mouth and in the air but was ignored the same way he ignored the screaming of his limbs and the awkward way his wings folded together—by pushing it far, far down in the recesses of his mind. The stars shone cold indifferent light onto the ever moving dunes and sparse vegetation that dared to grow in a wasteland. Anax took a step forward, his body sliding and sinking before he corrected his balance, then paused to slowly turn his heavy head left to right and right to left. Instinct made him turn toward the right. The massive guardian lumbered through the night, leaving a trail of heavy footprints and splotches of blood that was swallowed by sand and wind. |
