Biography
Dissonance
A Kind Death
Keeper of the Dead | Voice of the Grave
Some day, death comes for all living things.
Dissonance is somewhat of a recluse, dwelling in the lower caverns of the lair where bodies are fed to the flames of the hearth, biding them farewell. He tends to their souls and maintains an uncanny connection to those that have passed, at times speaking of things he should not have had knowledge of. He has no offspring and no mate, preferring the company of animals and the clan's few mystics. Though he is reclusive, he is far from unkind; the dragon merely sees enough value in life that he wishes warmth and a restful passing upon the dead. His voice speaks in two tones that don't seem to match, laying the foundation for his name. When the clan was but a decade old and newly dwelling in the Molten Scar, its members were still few. A close-knit family, slowly fed to grow with stray survivors periodically stumbling into the makeshift caverns carved into mountains just tall enough to avoid being denigrated as hills. One day, an odd Imperial hatchling collapsed at the gate, dehydrated and shaking. His fading tracks left a meandering trail of confusion. The young dragon rarely spoke and behaved in manners rather odd, jumping at shadows, staring at corners. The clan's leaders debated what to do about the strange child; some thought that their clan had never turned their backs on the lost, while others claimed that the dragon seemed haunted. He spoke strangely, as though carrying two voices in his body; at times, he would pause and seemingly listen for only silence. Some argued that he was a disaster waiting to happen, alluding to secrets that only dragons of his kind knew. |
Seeking an end to a never-ending debate, the young Imperial earth mage and mystic Tenderfang took the hatchling under his wing and gave him the name Dissonance. It soon became clear though that the fearful voices had been right - the dragonling was haunted, in a manner of speaking. Clan members began to report the sensation of chills when near the young dragon, as if cold winds passed right through their skin - though drafts often carried the heat of the Molten Scar through the halls, the cold was nearly unheard of. The dragons of the clan were deeply unnerved by this, nurturing dislike and rejection, but the hatchling's guardian remained steadfast. In many years, the phenomena would never grow past the occasional spooky cold, and so the matter was not forgotten, but simply ignored. It took years until the hatchling grew a voice strong enough to speak of the cold. During his long, hopeless journey through the Blacksand Annex, Dissonance had lost a friend to the horrors stalking the roiling mist, an older imperial just on the cusp of adulthood. Though both had been lost for weeks in the searing heat, one of them survived, carried forth by the sacrifice of the other. Her body was lost to the shifting landscape, leaving Dissonance with the memory of a body uncared for and a soul left fragmented and seared to his, as though forged into one by the Flamecaller's blood spilling from Sornieth's crust. The soul of the dead clings to his own, speaking to him in dissonant fragments. The world had never given them names, and so the clan came to call their unseen spirit the Nameless. No one else has ever heard her voice, but Dissonance assures that she speaks of the clan fondly. Whenever asked about it, he merely states that he is enjoying the company of an old friend. |
