His mother, lacking the education necessary to know any better, feared him to be a bad omen. She left him on the steps of an orphanage. He grew up with no friends, instead focusing on studying alchemy in the library. On the day that he came of age, he was sent away. He found an abandoned shack deep in the woods and continued his work there.

One day, a tiny hatchling showed up at his door. He immediately recognised the child to be infected by the Shade. He carefully wrapped up the young dragon and brought it inside, laying it down. He worked day and night to try and halt the effects of the terrible ailment, but ultimately failed. The child died, but not before it had affected Ostium. The next few weeks were the most excruciatingly painful times he'd ever experienced. The shade coursed through his skin, through his muscles, into his bones. It left large, green scars all over his body, which constantly flowed with the dark magic. It slowly eats him away from the inside.
