Some hatchlings come into the world as young prodigies, and Maple is definitely among those. From a young age the coatl could see ‘the strings that made up a dragon’s personality’ or ‘strings that controlled various events’. He could see and understand why a dragon would respond in a certain manner and how events and time could alter it. Maple… understood everyone around him, making him act nice to everyone- even those who teased him. Many just saw him as a happy, cheerful and kindhearted hatching, but that wasn’t even scratching the surface. The coatl hid many things- his heightened understanding, and how he essentially monitored the world around him- pretending to be an air-head.

Despite his heightened ability -being able to notice and interpret small changes in the environment- Maple’s lack of actual experiences in the world got him in trouble when a storm hit his home. Having seen the clouds but misinterpreting it as oncoming rain, the young coatl hid under a tree, which got hit by a bolt of lightning, setting it on fire. Maple did not survive the storm.

Which doesn’t mean the story is over for the small dragon.

When Maple woke up he was in a graveyard, and VERY confused. He clearly remembered the feeling of suffocating, of collapsing and breathing what he thought was his final breath, but then… why was he still here?! Wasn’t death supposed to be an endless inky darkness in which you couldn’t even feel or think? Why did his body look far less hatchling-like than he remembered it?! Why could he just pass through the few tombstones present?! Was-…were ghosts real?!

Maple knew he was terrified, and knew he HAD to calm himself down. He tried to do so by trying to understand what happened.

The coatl’s memories were foggy, lacked the amount of details the red dragon was used to and occasionally confused him. Only getting more frustrated by this, he tried to find the strings that normally allowed him to understand- which connected things.

There were none.

So… Maple forced himself to connect the dots- to MAKE those lines appear.

He had died, that much was obvious. He had probably woken up at his final resting place or near it (how ironic), and he probably looked much older because….

That’s where his memories and understanding of the world basically stopped, and Maple desperately tried to understand something he had never experienced or had to deal with before- things he didn’t even think were possible. But then, when the coatl was about to scream in frustration, he did something he had never done before.

He made two theories: things that weren’t proven yet but could offer a logical explanation. Maple was a bit intimidated by the fact that the fact that he most likely would not get the absolute ‘truth’, but still explored the two theories- just small ideas of how it could have gone.

Theory 1: His….ghostly form had taken on the form which fit his MENTAL age.
Maple knew he had always been a bit above his peers when it came to his mind, though he never showed it. Prehaps his spirit found a more mature form more fitting…?

Theory 2: He hadn’t died during the storm, but instead fell into a coma.
…Also pretty likely. Maybe he had been unconscious for a long time, before his body ultimately gave up or someone pulled the plug on him.

Deciding that both theories were pretty plausible, but still frustrated with the lack of CERTAINTY Maple began to wander. During his wandering he noticed no-one could perceive his presence- or perceived it in a negative way. This realization made him steer clear of other dragons, afraid one would use magic to harm him when they noticed his presence.

Which is when he met a fellow ghost- Tormented.

Though Maple had expanded on his ability to read and interpret other’s personalities and motives, the absence of others made using this skill slightly less… efficient. Tormented SEEMED like a really nice guy, but Maple knew there was something dark and foreboding about the other, though it seemed as if the darkness wouldn’t reach out to others….This obviously confused Maple quite a bit: Something was off about this guy yet he was also completely harmless.

The ghost told Maple he was on patrol for other ghosts, and saw the other’s frustrations. He generously offered the coatl a place in ‘the kingdom’ and explained he was a high ranked military officer (or ‘royal knight’ as he called it) who was always on the lookout for wandering souls which could benefit from the protection the kingdom provided. Apparently Maple was one of those wandering souls. Though this would sound suspicious to most- Maple didn’t get a sense of danger from the guy, and could see this was a genuine offer.

Deciding that things couldn’t get worse than being dead, he accepted.

The kingdom was entirely composed out of ghosts, which was ….not as surprising as it should have been: this coatl was a ghost, Maple was a ghost, heck, the KING was probably a ghost too!

Though Maple had expected Tormented to basically leave him to fend for himself, the white-colored ghost frequently visited him, inquiring if he had settled well, if he needed help with anything, etc. During these visits Maple didn’t act like an ‘air-headed idiot’- Tormented would be able to see right trough that. The white coatl may not have been aware of it, but Maple could tell the other could see one’s talents and capabilities, and as such hiding his ability to ‘connect the dots’ and ‘see the lines’ would only backfire in the long run. Still, when talking to OTHERS Maple fell back to his ‘primary’ personality.

The red ghost began to kind of long for the visits the white coatl would pay him, and was genuinely curious about the duties of the ‘royal knight’- despite the prestigious title, Tormented was more active in the kingdom helping anyone he could than actually fighting to defend the kingdom. The way the other coatl spoke about his duty was extremely inspiring to the younger ghost: Tormented spoke with such a sense of duty and passion of his tasks and what he was supposed to do on a daily base that Maple began to want to do the same things. He WANTED to become a royal knight like the older ghost. Though it took a LOT of time to convince the pale ghost, Maple managed to convince Tormented to make him his apprentice.

Though training meant he got to spend more time with the white ghost, Maple also began to piece together what had given him the ‘dark and foreboding’ feeling when first encountering the coatl, and in turn he opened up to his mentor about his ability and how he basically has two entirely differed faces. Though Tormented largely understood, he still frequently asked questions, such as if Maple ACTUALLY had a visual when ‘seeing the lines’ or if it was more of a metaphorical way of saying he saw the connection between various things, or if this ability took a lot of energy. Due to this Tormented actually discovered something rather amusing.

Despite how perceptive Maple is when it comes to others, emotions prove to be a struggle- both when it comes to others and himself. Maple knows the basics: fear, anger, joy and sadness, but more complex and difficult feelings were often put under the general title of a ‘simpler’ emotion. For example: annoyance, disgust, irritation, agitation, stress, envy, and tension are all perceived as ‘anger’ by the red coatl, the same with doubt, anxiety, panic, shock, surprise, embarrassment, helplessness, powerlessness, worry and despair being felt as ‘fear’. Sure, Maple feels ‘varying degrees of an emotion’, but if one were to ever ask him if he’s ever felt ‘ambitious’ he most likely will reply with a solid ‘no’. This has actually been noticed by various dragons of the kingdom, which makes them assume Maple is not just an airhead, but extremely oblivious as well.
