Shade wandered into Maeve's Midnight Garden many moons after being separated from her sisters. Maeve greeted her in one of the sunny groves- at the time Shade didn't know how unusual it was for Maeve to venture into the daylight side of the Garden. Maeve introduced her to the many wanderers who now called the Garden home.

Shade quickly became friends with Spruce and Dewdrop. They showed her a sunny cliffside where a deep blue river tumbled gregariously over the stone edge. There was an ancient oak tree whose roots tickled the edge of the river and whose branches arched high into the sky creating a cavern of cool damp space around the base of its gnarled trunk. It was there that Shade decided to make her home. The children of Maeve's Midnight Garden often visited her and she laughed with joy when they launched themselves off the cliffside into flight through the mist of the waterfall. She taught the youngsters some of the finer details of flying by cascading out from beneath her tree and blocking out the sun with her eyespotted wings.


I must unfurl in the shade
Legs lengthen, loosen
Wings outstretched
Feathers tickled by the breeze.

There is a quiet here that knows all sounds.
