Biography
Goldfish the Gaoler
Goldfish came rushing up to BigRig, “come look what i can see in the globe!” he told his mentor excitedly.
“Alright, what is it...” The Imperial replied, following his small friend into the looking-globe room.
“dragons-“ Goldfish whispered, drawing his claws over the globe until an image became visible. Great hairy Gaoler dragons rushed forward in the snow following a few of their tundra cousins out of the Fortress of ends. “they’re so amazing and beautiful. i’ve never seen anything like them before.”
“They are quite majestic, I agree.” BigRig rested on the floor and watched the Bogsneak. Goldfish had always wanted to be an imperial dragon since he was a hatchling. He spent hours watching BigRig and his son Nimbus fly and train in between his scouting work. But becoming an imperial was an impossible task, so he settled for a paper-bag disguise to wear when he thought nobody was watching. BigRig hoped things would soon change for his friend, and he was right.
The next week, an excited crowd gathered around CandyMecha, who had just returned from the market. She had a small helmeted creature with her, as well as two scrolls. The scrolls were what had excited everyone, they were able to turn any dragon into a mighty Gaoler. Goldfish was excited too, it would be so cool to have some Gaolers right here at home! CandyMecha soon shook herself from the crowd and flew up to Mari’s lair with the scrolls. Mari, as the leader, would decide who the scrolls went to, if they were even to be used at all.
Hours later, and there had been no response. CandyMecha came back down to what remained of the crowd and made an announcement, “Mari is having trouble deciding because any dragon the transforms will lose all their markings, and there are very few dragons who are willing to part with something like that.”
The dragons dispersed, all but BigRig. He waited until Goldfish had left before flying up to Mari’s den. The cloudy Mirror was lost in thought, bringing up images of dragons in a small crystal. “Hello Mari.” She was not even startled. “Dearest BigRig, do you have a suggestion?” She seemed to be able to read every dragon in the clan like a book. “Yes, in fact. Goldfish has been wanting a change for a while. I know his colors leave something to be desired but-“ he was interrupted by Mari handing him a scroll. “Go take it to him, he deserves it.”
Goldfish was half-sleeping under a tree outside, one open eye fixed on the moon. The moon suddenly disappeared and he snapped awake. BigRig stood in front of him, blocking out the sky, and dropped something from his mouth. Goldfish reeled back, “the scroll! did you steal it?” “No,” came the reply, “Mari told me to give it to you.” A smile spread across the Bogsneak’s whole face.
The next morning, the whole clan gathered to watch Goldfish transform. His best friends BigRig, Squashini and SalmonellaKun had front row seats. He was nervous, looking down at the runes on the scroll in front of him. He took a deep breath and traced his claws over the lines speaking them aloud in a quiet voice. The rest of the dragons saw his silhouette grow to one with huge antlers and more fluff than the few tundras among them. Then they heard his roar. A few tears fell amongst his friends- it was the happiest sound he had ever made.
