Unit N-217: The Synth

A marvel of biotechnology, the Scanner units were originally built to hunt down political dissidents at the order of a paranoid government. Unit N-217 and fifteen others escaped containment and went rogue, tearing down their place of origin as they fled. They did not get far before the other Scanners descended upon them, tearing into their own kind. Those few that were left made it out of the city boundaries, out into the wasteland in which no organic life could survive. They roamed the wastes for weeks, struggling as their wiring failed. On the thirty-third night of their exile, they came upon a forest. They walked warily; no natural forests had been seen in over a century. But the desire for shelter from the unceasing wind outweighed their fear, and they disappeared into the undergrowth. Scanner N-217 vanished in that forest, falling into a rift between worlds. She does not know what happened to her three surviving siblings.
