MIXOSAUR
The Defiant One
Middle Triassic – 250-240 million years ago. Between 1-2 metres long. Marine Reptile. A type of Ichthyosaur. Its name means ‘Mixed Lizard’ as scientists believe it to be the transitional evolutionary species between eel-shaped Ichthyosaur and dolphin-shaped Ichthyosaur. Its fossils have been found all over the world.
Ridgebacks don’t like the water. That’s what they say.
Idiots.
What? Do they think when it rains Ridgebacks shrivel up on the ground sobbing that they are melting?
So Ridgebacks aren’t the most naturally aquatic dragons...so what?
But what if some of us...just a small number...weren’t like the rest?

I always knew I was different. Born to a nest of five and the only Ridgeback among a loveable swarm of guardians.
Al wants to be hunter like the Wildclaws that live near us. Hadro wants to be a food alchemist whatever that is. Hopefully it involves chocolate. Draco is all set on conquering somewhere and ruling it. Pol is the youngest. He just wants to do something special with his life. I can relate to that.

Our father is a Ridgeback too. He is descendant from the ancient marine reptiles. He isn’t afraid of the water. And neither am I.
One day we will reclaim the water. I feel in my bones. I feel it in my blood. And I feel it in the song of my ancestors. They call to me.

On the day I leave the nest for the final time I make my way to the Southern Sea. It is a glorious day. The clouds have vanished from the sky and the calm sea laps peacefully against the beach. It is only the second time I have ever been here. The first was under the careful guidance of my father. Today I am alone.

I wade into the sea up to my hips and scream my defiance into the face of nature. I take a deep breath and dive.
