______ Marrow was never an evil dragon at heart. He had no thirst for blood, no desire to hear the screams of other dragons, no desire to kill. If things had worked out differently, he may have been a noble warrior.
Marrow was born and raised as a rogue. His father was Remnant, a rogue Imperial who had gone into hiding after his siblings turned against him. Remnant was a powerful sorcerer, and Marrow inherited his gift for magic. Remnant trained Marrow in magic, but warned him never to use his gift frivolously. Marrow listened at first, understanding the consequences of magic, and that dragons might fear him because of his power.

______ Marrow first met the Clan of Lost Knowledge after the clan had been driven out of the Southern Icefield. Remnant recognized Vertigo, the clan's heir and Marrow's mother. Vertigo recognized him and Marrow as well, although Marrow had been a newborn hatchling when Vertigo had abandoned him and left him with Remnant. Marrow had been mad at first, until he realized his mother had only left him because she was deeply loyal to her clan. Seeing her clan in front of him now, Marrow understood her commitment completely.
But the clan was slow to trust Remnant and Marrow. Remnant acted as a guide, helping lead the clan to safe territories, but some still refused to trust him. Marrow heard their constant whispers and gossiping, him and Remnant at the center of it all. Marrow didn't blame them. They were shrouded strangers with powerful magic. Why should the clan trust them?

______ When the clan reached safety and started building their new home within the Sunbeam Ruins, Remnant decided he was of no more use to the clan, and left in the middle of the night. Marrow knew he had a chance to catch up and follow Remnant, but he didn't want to. He liked being with his mother and her clan.
But when Vertigo awoke moments later, she advised Marrow to follow Remnant. She warned him that danger was stalking the clan, and he would be much safer with Remnant. So Marrow reluctantly left the clan, vanishing into the night before the rest of the clan awoke.
But Remnant was ambushed and slaughtered by a traitorous clan dragon before Marrow could reach him. Marrow sought revenge after that day, blaming the clan for his father's death.

______ Marrow spent the next few days alone, after giving his father a proper burial. Part of him wanted to return to his mother, but he knew he could never be with her again. He had sworn revenge on her clan.
After several days of wandering, Marrow found himself starving and dehydrated, nearly on the brink of death. But he was rescued by a mysterious Imperial, nursing him back to health with powerful magic. Marrow was confused and shocked- he had only seen such powerful magic in two other dragons- himself, and Remnant.
His questions were answered as the Imperial introduced herself as Wraith, sister of Remnant, and Marrow's aunt.

______ Wraith took Marrow under her wing, teaching him more powerful spells and how to better control his magic. She taught him how to fight, how to use his magic to aid him in battle, everything he might need for his vengeance on the clan. Wraith had been wronged by the clan too, long ago, and news of her brother's death only made her more keen to enact her own vengeance on the clan. Marrow was her ticket to destroying the clan, she knew it.
But their plan hit a snag when Marrow returned to the clan, attempting to infiltrate the clan and gain their trust. Most of the clan was still slow to trust him, except for the clan's heir, Vertigo's brother Aspen. Aspen knew Marrow was Vertigo's son, and he was basically the only dragon who knew besides Vertigo and Wraith. He welcomed Marrow as an equal, training with him and playfully teasing him as if he were already part of the clan. And that was why Marrow's plan begun to backfire. He liked Aspen. He genuinely cared about the Pearlcatcher as a friend, an equal. As family. And for his plan to work, he had to harden his heart, feel nothing but hatred for everyone within the clan. But that was hard to achieve with how he and Aspen seemed to genuinely care about each other.

______ Wraith was furious when she heard of Marrow's friendship with Aspen. Aspen had killed Wraith's other brother, Fatewatcher, so her grudge was solely with Aspen. When Marrow returned to her with his dilemma, she swore that she would destroy him if he couldn't help her get her vengeance. Marrow refused to help her kill Aspen, leaving Wraith to pursue her vengeance alone.
But part of Marrow still genuinely loved Wraith. She had saved him and taken him in when no one else would. She turned into his true mother, teaching him and helping him infinitely more than his real mother ever did. Marrow still believed there was good in Wraith, and he could bring it out of her.
But for now, Marrow joined the clan, eventually growing into a respected warrior. His grudge with the clan had mostly disappeared, and he had truly become part of the clan.
Until Wraith attempted her own vengeance.
Wraith returned several months later, attacking the clan alongside a band of powerful enemies from the clan's past. The clan ultimately won, but Wraith managed to corner Aspen, singling him out alone.
Marrow wanted to intervene- but who would he help? It was an evenly matched battle, and he was torn between his love for both of them. He didn't want either of them to die.
But Aspen managed to defeat Wraith, fatally wounding her and leaving her to die.
With her last moment of life, Wraith lifted her head to stare at Marrow, her piercing green eyes gazing intently into his ice-blue. There was a message in her eyes, a message as clear as day. She forgave Marrow, she loved him, and she was going to give him a second chance.
Until her life was taken before she could.
Marrow was furious, and driven mad by grief. This clan had destroyed his family, taken the lives of everyone close to him. Whatever friendship he had with Aspen was gone when he killed Wraith. Marrow wasn't going to let Wraith die in vain. He would complete her revenge, kill Aspen for her.
Marrow lunged and pinned Aspen, ready to kill the Pearlcatcher. Aspen could've easily struck down Marrow, but he refused to. Aspen wouldn't kill the dragon that had once been his dearest friend. No matter what Marrow did, Aspen would still cling to the memories of their great bond, the bond that Aspen had long wished to have with Vertigo herself.
Marrow lunged, his reinforced claws sinking into Aspen's chest, aimed to tear out his heart.
But Marrow would never know if he succeeded in avenging Wraith. Before he could see for sure if Aspen lived or died, he was struck from behind by Aspen's so-called "useless twit of a friend", Sericum. Sericum had always been the one dragon who had never trusted Marrow, and it was she who struck him down, stabbing him through the heart with the discarded sword that had belonged to Wraith herself.
So Marrow would never know if his life had been a failure or a success. In his own eyes, he was always the hero. But then, no one is ever a villain of their own story. Everyone is a hero of their story, and a villain of someone else's. And that would always be the case of the unfortunate Marrow, who could never decide for certain where his loyalties lie.
