Biography
"Hello." He was a handsome drake, his long serpentine body flashing with the newest gene, dressed in flowers and filigree. But his smile: ah, his smile was kind, and that was more precious still. "I'm Thorn. May I ask your name?"
I answered him.
He looked perplexed. "'Ex why why peacock'?" he repeated, then his expression cleared and he smiled again. "No, no, not your coloration, my lady. What do the dragons of your lair call you?"
I looked at my feet. "That is what they call me, sir." When they call me anything at all.
"Oh." He sat back on his haunches, and I didn't know if he was embarrassed for me or himself or something else entirely. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean -- not that there's anyhing wrong with that -- if ... do you like it?"
I glanced from side to side, to see if anyone was listening to us. Ba'al, my father, was watching closely, with eyes narrowed in his usual disapproval: of me, of the failure that I was, of my inability to secure a mate. I lifted my head and gave the stranger the practiced, coy look my mother had drilled into me. With a little smile, I brought my muzzle to his ear in a flirtatious motion, and I whispered, "I hate it."
"Oh," he said, and he didn't look any happier. "What would you like to be called?" I stared at him. I'd never thought about that before. He hesitated in the face of my silence. "Do you want to come to my lair? And we can help you pick a new name?"
I could feel my father's scowl upon me. I dipped my muzzle and nodded.
Then the stranger paid my brideprice, while my father blinked in shock. Thorn led me away from everything that I'd known, and I thought I would miss nothing about it at all.
