WE ARE BUT A FRAGMENT


______ It’s always the quiet ones. Spyro is a sweet dragon, but rarely speaks and is always somehow finding trouble. It’s as though he’s a magnet for it. When he was younger, he was often bullied for this quality. The other little dragons with whom he attended school and saw around in the Southern Icefields would often make fun of her for being “creepy.” He was always watching, always there, and always seemed to know everyone’s secrets. The curse of being observant. But being quiet was also always her superpower. It allowed him to investigate whatever he wanted without being noticed.

One day, when he was visiting a festival, Spyro silently snuck away from the rest of his group to explore everything it had to offer. No one noticed. It was his first time visiting this exciting, new venue and he wanted to see as much as he could. Spyro poked his head into every stall he could find, even making friends with a few of the vendors. And before long, as he wandered, he came around to a strange little hut on the outskirts of the fairgrounds. A huge chimney at the top of the building belched colorful smoke into the air and she could hear someone shuffling and grumbling inside. Curiosity getting the better of him, Spyro nudged his way inside.

It was here that he met an eccentric scientist and his great cauldron of alchemy. At first, the alchemist was happy to meet him, though confused, and offered to help him find his parents. But then, when his cauldron began to bubble over, he rushed to it in a panic. He began furiously stirring its contents and pouring in a few extra elements here and there to calm the mixture. The glowing liquid within it changed colors rapidly and Spyro couldn’t keep his eyes off of it. It was like he was hypnotized. So wonderstruck was she that he didn’t hear the alchemist’s warning of, "Get back!" until it was too late.

______ A bubble in the cauldron burst and some of the potion landed on Spyro’s scales, burning him. He reeled back in surprise and rolled over and over in an attempt to get it off. The alchemist stared at him with wide eyes, picking him up and fussing while he made sure that he was okay. “Ohhh, this is no good,” he’d fretted. And he told little Spyro the truth: that this potion had a dangerous side effect if it came into contact with a living dragon. Anyone it touched would remain frozen in time at the age that they were. Forever. Spyro’s eyes widened in shock, but the alchemist reassured him. He knew someone who could take great care of him in the Viridian Labyrinth.

It was through the alchemist that Spyro met Anzu and his family of other eternally youthful dragons like himself. Given the choice between living with them or going back home to the life of bullying he’d always experienced, Spyro would pick the same a hundred times over. He finally feels as though he’s found other dragons who understand him and he’s made some close friendships for life. He, Sidhara, and Jaeyelluh are especially close. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
