She is deeply touched by Plague magic, having experimented with it constantly over the course of her work. Thus, Kakkab has harsh patches of scales and a rather beak like muzzle, giving her the eerie appearance of a carrion bird.

One would probably expect her to have an unpleasant smell. On the contrary, while a certain must clings to her, her scent is usually that of incense and various candles...unless she was recently tending to a body.

____Her job can be beautiful. Lords or heroes, grander dragons than she, are given breathtaking sendoffs. When Darkness claims these small sparks, as it always does, those that remain send out flames of their own as if in defiance. The body is cremated, usually, and the smoldering ashes shine brightly against the night sky as they are spread. Then, lanterns float their gentle way upwards. Sometimes, only one- a single memory, a lone loved one left behind. Sometimes, hundreds, enough to rival the sun and make it seem as if the simple paper orbs are the stars themselves. These tiny, fragile embers represent the soul returning to the Mother of Light.

____No matter how many funerals she has directed in her time, they never fail to move her, despite what her cold and vulture like form may lead others to believe. While her chosen path is not a cheerful or appreciated one, to her it is rewarding. The Pearlcatcher is known to collect pearls and memories of the deceased so they will not be forgotten, and she has dozens of journals that each tell a tale of one who has passed. She has also had to face unsavory necromancers, grave robbers, and other characters of that ilk, and is quite wary while working as a result.

I am almost home; as I write, I know I have past the first of the wards, for I felt them tingle under my skin. The barriers surrounding the Duskspire Crater are subtle, soft as a feather trailing your face: they are only designed to warn, not protect, until you get to the entrance. Soon I shall talk to the others, the wanderers and permanent residents alike, and I shall have some of my answers.

I met a fellow pearlcatcher, one much like myself, no more than 100 yards from the first ward. She must have been visiting, for to the untrained eye there is no discernable path. From the look of her, I though at first she must be a herbalist, for even from a few steps away she had a pleasant air to her. However, something of the dry scales around her claws and the stillness deep in her eyes told me otherwise. As we drew level, I dipped my snout in a bow. She did likewise, cocking her head at me calmly.

Well met, she greeted in a thin, raspy voice. Traveler, or bound to the crater?

A bit of both, I replied. If you know if it, I take it you had business with the clan?

Aye. She placed a talon over a leather satchel at her side. It is good to break from the city for a few days. In the wilds, you get herbs of far better quality than the vendors dare dream of. I make them last, but it is good to restock when I can.

Herbs?

For preservation. She angled her head at me, but I let the topic go, focusing on her first words. A city… It was worth a try.

If you have been traveling, have you met a guardian on your way? A blacksmith, dark ruddy colors with bronze patches up her arms.

The pearlcatcher shook her head slowly. Nay. But most of the dragons I see are long gone on their way to the next life.

I suppressed a shudder. No luck, not that I expected, but… Not the best omen. I bade her farewell, sensing her desire to move on, and pushed forward. I cannot help but feel pressed for time.
