Fascinated from birth by the fierce storms of the Shifting Expanse, Bolzen frequently terrified his parents by climbing to the top of the massive Tempest Spire itself whenever the lightning began to strike. After being physically blasted from his perch a few times, parts of Bolzen's scales began to fuse together and eventually provided him with a natural buffer. He quickly gained a reputation as being favored by the Stormcatcher and even his parents relented a bit in their worries.

Bolzen soon recognized that staying within his home clan's comfortable hospital lair limited both his knowledge and ability to be useful, and so he struck out on his own with his parents' blessing to learn more about global weather patterns. Crossing the Sea of a Thousand Currents taught him about tsunamis, water spouts, and the behavior of hurricanes over water. The Windswept Plateau introduced him to tornadoes, which he found immensely entertaining.

Now upon his arrival in Rotrock Rim, he functions as a living lightning rod and has become an eerily accurate predictor of oncoming changes in weather with many dragons seeking out his advice before embarking on any long journey. Some dragons even prefer to have him travel with them, as he is able to encourage lightning storms to strike him alone and leave the others in relative safety.
