Harmony hummed softly to himself as he walked through the forest in early autumn. The trees were in full splendor, a stunning cacophony of colour. He liked to come out here, where if he stretched out his wings, they blended in seamlessly with the radiant canopy. He couldn't see where it ended and he began. He was no longer himself, no longer a dragon, but just another extension of the forest. He liked those rare moments, where he could exist without inner turmoil. To him, the forest was a peaceful place, and he thought if he could just become one with the trees, he might find peace too. But it was always a fleeting feeling. Then his mind would betray him again. It seemed he was always at war with himself. From soaring highs to crushing lows. He struggled to find a balance, a happy medium with his emotions. But any time he tried a prescribed remedy, all he seemed to feel was numb. Perhaps that was the only balance between the two. There was black, and white... and grey. Maybe that's what he needed. To be grey, so he could live normally among the other dragons. He looked back toward the southern horizon, wondering if anyone missed him. But why would they? He was unpredictable, and that was scary. He didn't mind that they feared him. He was afraid of himself too. He came to a halt, noting a strange chill in the air. Odd... the temperature wasn't slated to drop for weeks. Then he heard it, a whisper in his mind like the winter wind. Find the balance... “I'm trying.” He whispered. “I'm trying really hard. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.” Find the balance... the voice whispered again. The cold seemed to grow stronger. “How?” He demanded to the frigid air. “Do you want me to be grey? Is that it? Everyone else seems to...” The voice seemed to sigh. Then suddenly, he was struck by a vision. The forest vanished. He saw the entire planet, all the land and sea, a mighty sphere rotating in black space. Half the planet was illuminated, and half lay in darkness. He knew then this was the moment of his birth. Two extremes, each equal to one another. The seasons would turn, and each would have their time to reign. But they would always return to the balance. Find the balance, the voice spoke again. I would not call you to be grey. I call you to be autumn, both winter and summer in equal measure. In balance. He came back to himself then, in the glory of autumn. Could he really find a way? He never thought he could be destined for more than two halves masquerading as a whole. Maybe it was time to try the remedies again, and find one that would let him live in glorious colour. “I am Harmony.” He whispered defiantly. The name that had seemed such a cruel joke was now hope, and a promise. “I will find the balance. Somehow.” | xxxx |
