Runed Tuft of Fur

Kogane, while older than her sister, was born the runt. She was weak. Her scales were softer and more sensitive than normal hatchlings', and she was constantly burned by just being near a fire. She was not expected to survive, so not many paid attention to her.
But, as she grew, she found that she could manipulate the fire away from her body so she would not be roasted. She began to strut through camp with her head held high and a smug smile on her face as flames and lava twisted away from her, as if she was the one burning it.
Of course, this did not go unnoticed. Her sister was among the first to realize what was happening. As Kogane's family was quietly eating dinner together one night, her sister loudly declared, "Fire bows to Kogane."
A flurry of activity followed this revelation. Dragons in her clan were astonished to see the fire lean away from her with a mere thought from Kogane. They worked her and trained her, but it was just too much for Kogane to handle. Her father was a demanding dragon, however, and pushed her to continue. Every day, she felt her magic strengthening but she also felt her physical body deteriorating.
Her mother was secretly against the dragons pushing her daughter so hard, but she didn't know where to send Kogane. Her prayers to save her eldest daughter were answered one day, when a bird arrived with an invitation for the Academy of Magic. She secretly sent Kogane off with some rations, a waterskin, and all the treasure she could spare.
Within a few days of an easy journey, Kogane found the Academy of Magic. Her mother's directions had been spot on. As she entered the imposing building built into the side of the Great Furnace, she mentally thanked her mother.
The academy was absolutely perfect for Kogane. The teachers were gentle, but firm, with her, and she could feel her magic improving from day one. The pace that she was learning at was far superior to the one at her clan, since, instead of weakening her body, learning her magic was strengthening it.
There, she also met her best friend, Akatsuki. He was a jolly Imperial with a taste for adventure and fashion, though his eyes always held a bit of sadness. The two studied together, talked together, and worked together.
Before they knew it, they were graduating and heading off into the world to spread their gifts. The two decided to travel together when the time came to leave. They spent many happy moments travelling Sornieth, meeting new friends, fighting dangerous foes, protecting innocents.
All that changed the fateful day when the two were laughing and diving in the skies of the Light kingdom. Akatsuki froze as screams reached his ears. In a hurry, he winged towards the sound, Kogane on his heels. When they arrived, Kogane gasped.
A camp was in ruins. Laughing dragons reared up among corpses of others, reveling in the blood of the fallen. Akatsuki growled, his eyes narrowing, a spell's name teasing his tongue. Kogane put a claw on his shoulder. "No, Akatsuki. It's too late."
His rage died down, the fury turning to sorrow. "If we had just been a little earlier..."
He trailed off as he noticed a strange sight: a perfectly round egg tumbling down a gentle slope. Without any interference, it would likely survive the fall... if there wasn't a riverbank lined with jagged rocks.
With a roar of shock and anger, he swooped down upon the egg, picking it up gently in his claws. As he fumbled with it before pulling it close to his chest, he flew back up to his partner, concern marring her face. "Are you sure it'll be alright?" Worry for the egg was evident in her eyes; she had never had a child before and if the life inside the shell was snuffed out, she didn't know how she'd react.
"...I'm not sure if the dragon will be normal," Akatsuki finally said after a long pause. His brow was creased and a sigh escaped his lips. "It's too bad we couldn't save anyone else..."
A fierce lion of love for her friend reared up in her, causing her to reach out and grasp his forearm. "Hey." Akatsuki stared at her from under those familiar, hooded eyes. "This egg is a life. A life that you saved. If we hadn't been traveling through the Sunbeam Ruins, it surely would have died."
Akatsuki didn't look convinced but dipped his head nonetheless. "I suppose you're right."
The egg hatched into a strange dragon who, once she was old enough to understand words, called herself III. She had magical powers that drew upon, in short, memories. III could manipulate the elements depending on the lifestyle of long-dead denizens of nearby ruins or an abandoned village. It was a strange and beautiful power.
Kogane was the first to become fed up with travel. All the long years of drifting from place to place, making friends, and watching them disappear started to wear down on her. III agreed, but it took both of them to convince Akatsuki.
Each of them had different ideas of where to go. III and Akatsuki wanted to go to the domains of Ice and Light respectively. Kogane felt the normal pull to go back to the Ashfall Waste to find a mate, but this time, it was more desperate. She had already experienced it once, but, having resisted the urge last year with help from Akatuski and not produced any children, it was double the strength that it had been previously. She couldn't beat down the primal instinct in herself this time.
Without really knowing what she was doing, she rose in the middle of the night and disappeared. Akatsuki followed after her, knowing exactly what had happened. III tagged along.
The next week was a blur. All Kogane remembers the familiar heat of fire licking at her scales, now harder and less weak than they had been forever ago, the faces of dozens of Coatls, all producing eggs, and newborn children circling her feet.
After the breeding period for Coatls had ceased, Kogane 'woke up' from her urge. She found that in the week or so that she had been searching for a suitor, Akatsuki and III had found a clan and settled in. She found herself loving it just as much as they did, and they ended up staying in it.

Kogane is a Coatl with fire manipulation powers. Her skills have increased from just making fire bend slightly away from her. Now, she can call up a fire-storm with a bat of her eyelashes or put out a raging fire with a wave of her claws.
She is surprisingly playful for such a powerful and downright dangerous dragon. Her antics include many things, from playing with hatchlings to trying to convince dragons to play chase with her. However, the most notorious out of all of her games is her tail-batting. Any dragon that has been in the clan for awhile could drone to you on and on about how Kogane's tail-batting is completely out of control and that Honoo should really talk to her about it... but who's going to stand up to the dragon that could probably fry a volcano to a crisp?
Though she does participate in activities that are commonly deemed as childish, Kogane can be extremely serious. When Akatuski or III are struggling or in pain, Kogane is always the first to be there, offering simple but heartfelt words. Sometimes, all one needs in just a brush of Kogane's wings to be assured that everything will turn out alright.
Her gentle, but playful, demeanor has made her quite popular with the young ones. From the hatchlings that were born at the beginning of Kogane's time in Honoo's clan to the present, not one hatchling has ever disliked her presence. Her speaking is plain but moving, allowing her to tell stories to them, and her child-like behavior helps her play with them.
You can tell by the twinkle in her eye that she's one of the happiest dragons in all of Sornieth. Changing from her life of adventure and constant moving to a gentle and quiet clan life was the third best decision she made (below becoming friends with Akatsuki and III and going to the Academy of magic). The grin on her face proudly declares, "I'm happy I'm done with that. I am never looking back."

An Unheard Roar

Kogane's heart hurt as she saw III diving towards the ground. In all the practices for this battle, when III broke formation, Kogane would laugh and gently tease her... but this was the real thing. Thanks to III's arrogance, she could die. The thought of the flamboyant Tundra disappearing from the world forever brought tears to her eyes and rage to her brain. "Akatsuki!" Kogane roared. The Imperial, who was waiting for the command to swoop upon the enemy, turned towards her, then noticed III's descent, his eyes widening. Kogane gave a curt nod. "Come on!"
She zipped as swiftly as she could towards III, ethereal blue flames flickering on the edges of her claws. Already, III was engrossed in battle, using a spinning mass of water as a weapon and shield. She was having difficulty with a particular opponent, a huge Guardian clad in shining armor, so she didn't notice the Fae behind her, whispering a spell.
Kogane let loose another roar. It shook the very air and rattled the bones of the dragons around her. Not many dragons have heard that roar and lived.
Her face furrowed into fury, she thought to herself, And not many will live this time, either...
