The Panama Golden Frog once thrived in the rain and cloud forests of Panama, but numbers have plummeted since the appearance of the fungal disease chytridiomycosis, also known as chytrid fungus. While they are believed to be extinct in the wild, populations are healthy and steady in captivity.

The Panama Golden Frog is a distant cousin of the poison dart frog, and its neuro toxin has been named "zetekitoxin" after its scientific name. Zetekitoxin is the most dangerous toxin out of all other toxins produced by the other frogs in the Golden Frog's family, Bufonidae.

Something interesting about the Golden Frog is that while males can produce a loud whistle, the frogs also exhibit a form of "sign-language," waving their arms and legs to communicate. These waves can be used to protect territory, attract a mate, and greet other frogs.

Golden Frogs can appear light yellow/green to their trademark yellow. They may also have black spots, though some individuals have no spots at all.

Zoos are currently working on building a breeding habitat in Panama for the frogs, in hopes of reintroducing them to their native habitat.
