There’s a melody only she can hear that drifts by on the breeze, a slow syrupy song, flows through the air like a ribbon of maple, or honey. She sways through each moment, a twirl in her every step, an unspoken promise that she and she alone heeds the silent rhythm. If she were ever questioned about it she might take a second to respond, the slightest intake of breath the only sign that she had even heard, before replying with a laugh that bubbles forth like warm spring water. Why? she would ask, eyes wide, head tilted to the side. Do you not hear it, too?

Although she is by all measures beautiful, for many she is far too odd, far too unorthodox, far too distant from these beaten paths. But in truth it is to these folks that she is the most enviable, for she floats through life without a single care, as if she lives in a shimmering soap bubble, in a child’s daydream. Never in a rush to respond, never in a hurry. But always dancing, somehow, always spreading elegantly adorned wings and finding the next unwritten step. They marvel at her, or they stare at her in a jealous rage, and still she dances on, blissfully unaware. To be so beautiful, they sigh. To be so lovely, they curse.
