Biography
Basil
bay-sill Cheerful | Prophet of the Toxic Wastes | Scavenger
Backstory Born to the Reedcleft Ascent, Basil spent most of his formative years leaping and gliding from cliff to cliff, never giving away the secret of the abilities brewing within his mind. It was all hatchling's play; he saw familiar faces in the turbulent waters, envisioned possible futures when he closed his eyes, and then went about his day with his strange knowledge tucked under his belt. It wasn't until he had begun to mature that Basil realized he had a very unusual gift. His clan revered him for his abilities, told him that when he was older, he would hold a high position among their ranks. The idea was certainly tempting, but when Basil looked into the future, he never saw his home clan as being a part of it. He saw many places and many possibilities, but what always seemed to stick out was the Scarred Wasteland. The clan was aghast at the idea. The Scarred Wasteland? For a seer born in the Windswept Plateau? But Basil knew what he saw, and would not be dissuaded. When the time came that he be promoted in his birth clan's ranks, he left the Plateau instead, soaring away to discover Sornieth and all that awaited him. As he meandered his way around through the various Flights, seeking their wisdom and experience, something consistently troubled him. When he closed his eyes for too long, or meditated too hard, or looked into the deepest of scrying pools, Basil always saw the worst possible thing: the end of the world. The Shade would come down from the heavens, massive and dark, and creep over the land like a lazy predator, devouring all in its wake. Dragons were transformed and made into horrible beasts. Eggs rotted and died. The dragon Gods came down to fight, but bickered so much amongst each other that by the time they were paying attention, The Shade had already taken hold of them and would not let go. Basil, being only one dragon, did not know how to change the fate of the world. All he knew was what he saw: before The Shade, there was the Scarred Wasteland, and a hollow dug down in the Wandering Contagion. Perhaps, he reasoned, if he followed fate's path for him, he could change the horrible future that was to come. He had found many times as a juvenile dragon that the future could always be changed; nothing was ever set in stone. All he had to do was make choices, and try to influence others to do the same. Thus, in time, he made his way to the Toxic Wastes, only a fledgling clan at the time and barely much of a lair. Andiron, Ankarv, and Tox were quite skeptical at first; a seer? One destined to live with them? It seemed ridiculous, and yet... Basil knew too many things, and he knew them well. Andiron was the one to make the decision to allow him to stay, and Basil thanked him profusely before settling into the lair as though he'd always lived there. Now, Basil is a highly-respected member of the clan, and one of the dragons Andiron goes to in times of need on behalf of the entirety of the Toxic Wastes. Basil does the best he can to make things better for everyone, and prays that with enough goodwill and hard-earned battles, the nightmares of The Shade will finally fade away. |
