Biography
Asha grew up in a clan of misfits, a collection of ragtag mercenaries and criminals with no interest in flimsy morality or ethics - only the appeal of the coin. She's never been told how she ended up in their care, though she has her suspicions that her egg was just one of many embroiled in a sinister deal. But unlike the others, she proved too valuable to pass off for gold alone.
For behind the golden shawls and silks lies a pair of red-slitted eyes all too keenly aware of the future. From a young age, Asha was blessed (or cursed) with the gift of foresight. Manifesting itself in overwhelming, kaleidoscopic visions, it was a powerful - albeit hard to control - ability. Perhaps that's why even in her earliest memories, she remembers so much darkness; for if there was no world for her eyes to observe, neither was there a future to see.
Tied with those, however, are countless training sessions with the clan matriarch to get a handle on her visions. Breathing exercises, magic flow control, meditation - all very, very difficult tasks for a young Spiral to focus on. But the clan mother was nothing if not patient, and soon the fruits of their labour became visible. Asha was able to grasp larger and larger fragments of prophecy, enough to be hawked on the streets as a fortune teller. And as her control grew, she soon became entangled in the inner workings of the clan itself, asked to help plan and gauge the success rates of heists and robberies.
Asha was an integral part of the clan's success, and lived a life of luxury, wealth, and respect as a result. But her life was that of a starling in a gold cage. She had tied herself inextricably to the fate of her clan, and so long as those connections existed, she could never truly be free. She slowly became disillusioned with those around her, as she realized the twisted nature of the love they held for her; that their affection was only towards what she could do for them, not any love for her. She often shut herself in the clan's library, choosing to while away in fantasy, the only place she could truly be free.
It was there that she first met Cerulean, a Fae cartographer hired to draw a map for the clan's next job. He was, as all Faes are, painfully unemotive. But Asha found a strange fun in deciphering the meaning of his words through a mixture of foresight and inference. From the ways he reacted to her, she could tell if he meant to be inquisitive or upset, happy or declarative. He slowly became more expressive, incorporating sarcasm and humour into his speech. The words still had the exact same tone to them, but she was always able to pick out what he meant.
