LAGAN tadpole leviathan | swamp monster | any pronouns
ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
▾ The depths of Sorineth's oceans are dangerous places. To say nothing of the crushing pressure, freezing waters, lack of light, and boiling volcanic vents, they are often teeming with predators. These hungry giants stalk the seabed and abyssal trenches, growing ancient and enormous in the perpetual blackness. This is no place to raise young, so some species of leviathan lay their eggs in nests of bubbles and float them to the surface. The vast majority of these spawn will be eaten before they see sunlight, and even fewer will survive long enough to find a current and drift to land.
▾ Of the millions of eggs it was hatched with, Lagan was the sole survivor. Its egg washed up and hatched in the dense salt marshes along the edge of Galehart territory. Lagan's species are born blind and amphibious. They have incredibly long lifespans, and their first few centuries are spent hunting along shallow coastlines, snuffling through mud and dense vegetation while they learn to hunt and fend for themselves. In this tadpole phase, they closely mimic guardian dragons in size and appearance: heavyset, gilled creatures with twisting horns and rows of mottled fins down their spines where a dragon's wings would be. As they mature, they lose their limbs and their ability to breathe air, and slowly begin to depend less and less on the abundant, easy prey of the surface world. When they are large and strong enough, they will eventually slither back out into open waters and continue to grow exponentially until they eventually dive back to the abyss to breed and live out the rest of their adult lives.
