Biography
Job:
Blacksmith |
|
Clang! Clank! Clang! Clank! Anvil hammered away at the glowing slab of metal before him, pounding to a practiced rhythm. His strokes were measured and strong, each one striking the precise area needed to shape the bar into a sword. While he was happy to be working on a sword this time, most of his orders were for armor or various building supplies. Young, growing dragons who battled in the coliseum needed their armor constantly re-fitted, and most were equipped with claws and teeth that served them just fine as weapons. Armor took the longest to make, as imperials, guardians, and ridgebacks could grow to enormous sizes. Many plates made up the largest armor sets, and took multiple blacksmiths to link together and fit to the dragon's shape. Anvil had worked as an apprentice for a long time, helping out with projects like this, and now could choose the work he wanted to be doing. At last he could finally call himself a full-fledged blacksmith. He saw the metal he was working on change color ever so slightly, and knew that it was ready to be quenched. Gripping the metal prongs that held the bar in place, he lifted it from the anvil and plunged it into the barrel of murky water beside him. As soon as the glowing metal hit the surface of the water, it hissed and sent up a billowing cloud of steam. He watched the water bubble as the glow faded, and held it until he saw just the right color. Smithing was hard work, but he enjoyed the challenge. It took long hours of work and repetition to make anything, but his arms were strong and his eyes trained to notice the subtleties of the heat and metal that he worked with. Lifting the bar from the water, an untrained eye would assume that the metal would now be cold to the touch, as it looked like a blackened, crispy bar dripping with dirty water. He, however, could see the faint glow from within and knew that the metal would still be hot to the touch. When forging the particular kind of sword he was going for, it was strongest if it never was allowed to cool until the final touches needed to be made. That way, the core remained flexible and filled with the fires of the forge to give it life in battle. It also meant that he would be working this same sword for days straight, unable to sleep or rest until it was finished. Of course, he could hand it off to another blacksmith to work on while he rested, but Anvil wanted to see the job through. If that meant pounding away at the forge for 3 days straight, he'd do it. |
