______ Once a vagabond across the many lands, Ecirane found shelter and home upon a humble lair buried within the bamboo forests of the Zephyr Steepes. Originally housing only a handful of communal buildings, she helped organize and grow the clan's settlement and earned the respect of all of it's members. Though it's a sizable village, now, the strong bonds that were woven find peace in their lair-wide dinners each evening. As their numbers grew, however, they found that their meager hoards of treasure made from their pottery and trinkets were not enough to sustain the clan.

______ Determined to aid her clan, Ecirane employed the aid of some of her less savory cohorts of her wayward days. The ceramics and crafts became the disguise of smuggled goods as they made their way across Sorneith, recognizable to the right eyes by the vibrant green swirl stamped on the packages. Ecirane earned her place at the top, the original leader happy to live passively within the village with her family rather than negotiate black market trades, keep allies in check, and other such duties that come with being part of a smuggling operation.

What was this hospitality that offered her a seat, humble cushions amongst a communal table? A fae gently placed a plate before her, steam billowing before the host's striking peridot eyes amidst her deep purple complexion. What was her name again? Mar? Mardi? Something strange that fell odd along the tongue, even stranger in the impression of this dragon's warm welcome. Gut twisting after days of chewing sugar cane to sooth her hunger, Ecirane accepted her first hot meal in weeks with thanks. Across the table, a shimmering violet imperial gazed at her curiously.

Mar let out a long sigh, something she didn't express lightly in any company. She seemed to consider Ecirane's words a long time before returning a watchful gaze. The lone candle flickered in both of their eyes.

"Ecirane... you have done nothing but... build this village, this family, since your decision to stay. Words cannot express my thanks to you for that. But are you sure that it has come to this? Is this the only way?" Windchimes trickled their sweet song into the silent abode, soft snores even carrying over to their meeting place from the sleeping quarters. Ecirane continued her fixated stare, unfaltered as she responded.

"I am."

Mardi brought her claws to Ecirane's cheek, delicate fingers dwarfed by her size.

"Then perhaps... it's time someone else took care of this clan."

Ecirane reread the letter carefully, the familiar scripty handwriting mocking her with its formality.

'Dearest Ecirane,

I don't believe a return to Cierzo is approaching in my future. Next moon phase, another eclipse is to be expected, and a timely return to The Isles would not be possible should I leave to the Steppes. Please understand this, darling, and know I think of you with every moment of our days apart. Attached is a report of ingredients of high demand in the region.

Forever Yours,
Alexandrite
'

Her heart squeezed as she took in his words. Another prolonged absence from him, another cold letter with scarce a mention of any intention to return to her. It could be weeks or even months before his next appearance for all she knew, each day a disappointing reminder of his habits. Turning her attention to the hatchlings heaped together in quiet sleep beside her, she returned the letter to it's stack and heaved a heavy sigh as she blew out her candle.
