Octavian

English form of the Latin Octavianus

Gaius Octavius Thurinus (Octavian), later known as Augustus Caesar, was the first official emperor of Rome after the fall of its republic. The grand-nephew of Julius Caesar, he was named as his heir and adopted son in his will. After Caesar's assassination, Octavian, seventeen, gathered his troops, defeating longtime rival Mark Antony. (Antony had divorced his sister, Octavia, to be with Cleopatra.) Both Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide, ending one of history's most famous, scandalous love stories.

In 27 B.C., Octavian changed his name to Augustus Caesar (the title of emperor) with the power of the Roman senate, officially becoming emperor, and expanded Rome more than ever. His legacy is one of the most revered in the empire that lasted over a thousand years. 		s4LA0cz.png
