FOUNDER
1 | 2 | 3 | 4

They only ever could call her Founder, or the Archmage before she disappeared. She had been the first that they had known. She had been the one who built the citadel stone by stone, rolling down the mountain. At first, it had only been piles – then mounds – then walls, then many towers overlooking it all. Her skin had pulsed with the magic of her strength, cracking her wings into crystal rivulets and weighing heavier by the sun’s setting. At first, she had needed none. At first, she might have been called young.

But age wore her scales thin at the edges, and her shoulder began to bow. So she built herself armor from the mountain’s offerings, and it too pulsed with magic, shining and shimmering behind her deepset eyes and in the grain of the silver wood. The leaves on the branches turned a strange violet as still she worked alone at her thankless task. She knew too well she would be building a city she would never live within, planting seeds in a garden she could never see, pushing harder, pushing further. She had believed herself to be alone--and convinced herself her company was the only kind she could keep happily. Then there came another, and she knew him only by the way she knew there was someone watching her. They did their work side by side, casting glances at the trees and knowing there was another.

She liked that he was quiet. He liked that she didn’t ask questions.

Time passed and they knew the routine, yet something nudged her when she made her afternoon tea to set out another cup. For the first three days, he only drank and bowed his head in thanks before returning to his gathering. For the next three, she ate what he brought and bowed her head in thanks. The time lengthened when they would sit with one another and share the space, careful not to rush, careful not to speak. They were content this way.

Time whisked colors into the leaves, cold into the night, and he brought her a ragged coat she could tell he had made by claw, the stitching stretched in odd places and tightened in others. This time she spoke aloud her thanks and he nodded, slinking back to wherever he slept. She still worked, and the citadel still grew, though there was only she and him sharing the mountain's edges.

She remembered the world of before only faintly now. When all but her name has become dust in her memories, this was when the citadel began to be filled with dragons. She was made leader, judge, executioner. Fortunately, executioner was only a formality.

She knew as she saw the leaves upon her wings fade there would be another. She knew that she would find her successor and that there would be so little time left. She knew too now the name of her companion and his own troubles with hatchlings. She could almost laugh as she hid her successor away with him, deep in the forest they had seen grow up and up and up.

She liked that he didn’t ask questions. He liked that she was quiet.

They shared tea and her favorite muffin tops, sharing a conversation that had never been heard before, not been said. They were alone, but not lonely. They shared pastries and his favorite chai. Time passed and she wished she could say more for the first time in her life but there was no more to be said. No more to be done. So she rose to her feet and walked over the mountain and towards the horizon while he stayed among the leaves and remembered her name for her.

When they called her Founder, he called her Isra.
