Marc burns things just to see the flames dance. That was the simple truth. The patterns of the smoke, the ash, the disintegration of solid matter into insignificant specs blown on the wind from place to place. Heating a substance to the limit, until the point of vaporisation, not to serve a purpose other than his own enjoyment. Any other products of the incineration are merely added bonuses.

But burning everything that he came into contact with wasn't a survival strategy. He had to redirect his talents beyond mindless incineration, the easiest way to do that was to begin taking commissions. A fire hot enough could erase all evidence and still make it look like an accident - it was far superior to scrubbing a lair clean. Marc became one of the most sort after dragons in the underworld, and his commissions skyrocketed in price. It was through these illicit activities that he encountered the sea witch...
