Biologically mute, see can see glimpses into the future and events. Does her best to warn her clammates if they are in potential danger, resulting in a very intense game of charades. Healer

29-4-2019
Rosaline stumbled upon a small inn as she wandered around Starwood Strand. She knew that some Arcane dragons made their home in these woods, but that didn’t make it any less dangerous; the trees of Starwood Strand liked to weave illusions of mystical lights. It could put dragons into a strange trance, trapping them within the woods forever.

So, the PearlCatcher was naturally caution when she slowly approached the building. It could very much be a part of the woods illusion, after all. She was quickly met with another dragon when Rosaline made it to the inn’s entrance.

31515368p.png

“Oh, hello! Are you lost? You can come to stay in our inn if you want! I know the woods can be confusing at times- You can wait until the illusions projected by the trees to fade before continuing on your way!”

Hm. The dragon did not appear to be an illusion created by the woods, so Rosaline decided it was probably a good idea to wait out the strange mist among the trees before she continued her way through Starwood Strand. The Pearlcatcher nodded and followed the Skydancer into the inn.

30-4-2019
Rosaline didn’t spend a lot of time interacting with a lot of the other residents of the inn, but she did listen in on the conversations that some groups of dragons would have under the willow tree in the center of the inn. From what the PearlCatcher could gather, it seemed that dragons that got lost in Starwood Strand sometimes found themselves stumbling upon the inn. The dragons who did usually end up leaving after an indefinite amount of time, though aside from that, it was clear that none of the other residents really knew how the inn or the woods surrounding it worked.

The PearlCatcher wasn’t too bothered by this revelation, however; Sure, it was a bit troublesome now that she was practically trapped in the woods, but if what she managed to gather from the other dragons was accurate, it was was only temporary, and she would be able to leave once her arbitrary stay at the inn was over. Then, she was free to leave.

1-5-2019
Though Rosaline did not want to come across as nosy, there was only so much she could do to entertain herself, and the PearlCatcher decided that she would go around and attempt to explore the inn further. It was not as if she could talk to the other dragons under the willow tree without them getting completely lost, anyways, so Rosaline would have to be content with exploring the many hallways in the inn for now.

While the PearlCatcher was observing the small shimmer of light that seemed to dance across the surface of the wooden floor tiles as she swept her tail over it, she accidentally bumped into another dragon. Scrambling to her feet, Rosaline helped the other dragon up, before recognizing this dragon as the same that had greeted her at the inn’s entrance. The dragon must have recognized her, too.

31515368p.png

“Oh, it’s you! I’m sorry about that- I really should be looking where I was going! Anyways, are you alright? Are you hurt?”

Rosaline shook her head. She was just startled. The Skydancer appeared relieved.

31515368p.png

“Ah- That’s good! I would feel quite guilty if I ended up hurting you because of my own negligence. Anyways, I don’t believe I got your name from when he first met; I’m Canary! What’s yours?”

2-5-2019
The two dragons just stared at each other for a while. When the Skydancer- Canary- seemed to get concerned about the lack of an answer, Rosaline pointed a claw to her neck and then shook her head. The Skydancer looked at her, then down at her neck.

31515368p.png

“Um… What?”

Rosaline repeated the action again, but when it was clear that Canary just didn’t understand what she was attempting to convey, The PearlCatcher decided to ask if the other dragon knew sign language through signing instead. Maybe she would recognize the gesture?

The Skydancer squinted, still trying to make sense of what Rosaline was trying to get across. Then, a sudden shimmer of realization flashed across her eyes.

31515368p.png

“Oh- I see! You do the, the… Oh, what is it called again…? The, thing that mute dragons use to communicate!”

Rosaline smiled and nodded. At least the other dragon knew what sign language was. Before she could do anything else, however, the PearlCatcher felt the other dragon taking her wrist and dragging her along.

31515368p.png

“Come with me! I know someone we can talk to!”

3-5-2019
Rosaline allowed herself to be dragged down one of the larger hallways of the inn. Canary knocked on the door at the end once they reached it.

31515368p.png

“Lady Lana? Lady Lana! Are you there?”

There was the sound of something falling coming from behind the door, along with the voice of some dragon grumbling. Rosaline frowned, concerned. After a momentary silence, the door slid open, and a Guardian dragon stepped out. She looked in between her and Canary, her expression unreadable.

30751365p.png

“What is it, Canary? Is something wrong?”

31515368p.png

“Lady Lana, you can talk with dragons who can’t, right?”

The Guardian dragon, Lana, frowned at Canary. She appeared to be considering the Skydacner’s words, before turning to Rosaline. The Guardian dragon raised a paw and signed,

30751365p.png

‘Is she talking about you?’

4-5-2019
Rosaline was surprised- To her knowledge, not many dragons knew what sign language was, much less knew how to use it to communicate. She signed back immediately, perhaps a bit too zealously after having found another dragon to share her common language, filling in the Guardian dragon about what had happened; That she had accidentally ran into Canary and, after a bit of an initial language barrier, the Skydancer had brought her here to meet the Guardian dragon herself. It took the PearlCatcher a while before she noticed that Canary was still staring at the two of them, completely lost and confused as to what was happening.

With Lana acting as their pseudo-mediator, though, the gap was quickly bridged. The two dragons seemed friendly enough, so Rosaline had no problem telling the two of them a little bit about herself, which Lana relayed verbally back to Canary. The Skydancer listened intently, her interest in getting to know her was clear, thought when Rosaline had casually mentioned she sometimes used her ability to see glimpses of the future to aid her clanmates, Canary’s eyes seem to light up.

31515368p.png

“You can see the future, too? We had another dragon who was able to tell the future with these small dices she had! How does yours work? Is it similar?”

Well… No- Rosaline quickly explained that the way her precognition worked was more akin to receiving a vision, instead of using cards or dice to aid her. The PearlCatcher offered to read hers, seeing how interested Canary appeared to be in her precognition.

31515368p.png

“Oh- No, that’s alright! Um, no offense or anything- It’s just that, when the last dragon did it, my cauldron ended up exploding. I mean, it was technically my fault, but I don’t think I can handle quite a shock again for another while!”

… A cauldron… Exploded due to some dragon attempting to tell the future? Rosaline wasn’t sure if it was something she should be concerned or not.

5-5-2019
Shortly after their initial meeting, the three dragons become quick friends; Canary was happy, brimming with positive energy, though not overbearingly so. In contrast, Lana did not seem to talk much, but her silence did not come across as uncomfortable brooding. Instead, the Guardian dragon seemed to be hyper aware of the dragons that surround her, and both her and Rosaline appeared to have allowed Canary to do most of the talking among the three of them, so… It wasn’t too bad of an arrangement.

On one particular day during Rosaline’s stay at the inn, Canary had invited her for tea at the inn’s healing ward. Lana had tagged along as well, as the Skydancer would be quite lost without the Guardian to translate everything Rosaline said to her.

It took Rosaline some time to find the infirmary. Canary greeted her as soon as she stepped in through the doorway.

31515368p.png

“Rosaline! I’m glad you can make it! I’m just finishing cleaning up the place! Please make yourself comfortable in the meantime!”

The PearlCatcher smiled. Once Canary had tucked away all of her potions and brewing safely, the three of them shared a quick meal.

“Rosaline- You said that sometimes, you used your future-seeing powers to warn your clanmates about possible dangers, right?”

The PearlCatcher blinked, but nodded, acknowledging the question. Canary was attempting to make conversation as they finished the remainder of the food.

31515368p.png

“Oh, I was just curious; I mean, I didn’t really know a lot about sign language before you arrived at the inn and all, and, I was wondering, if you saw something bad happening to your clanmates in the future- How would you tell them? Like, does one of your clanmates know sign language, too?”

The Guardian dragon appeared to choke on her tea. She looked at Canary in disbelief.

30751365p.png

“Canary. She’s just mute. She can write down what she saw and let her clanmates read it. It’s not that complicated.”

31515368p.png

“...Oh.”

Canary blushed, her feathers puffed up in embarrassment. Rosaline snorted back a short laugh, though she quickly signed that even if she could convey her vision to her clanmates, her visions were usually cryptic, and it ended up with everyone scrambling in a panic in an attempt to understand what it meant anyways, regardless of the lack of a language barrier. Canary laughed.

31515368p.png

“Oh dear. That surely sounds hectic.”

Rosaline nodded in agreement. She briefly recounted one of her previous experiences with helping another one of her clanmates using her visions of the future, though it did not turn out the way she had originally wanted to. Canary seemed to enjoy her retelling, even though it was clear that she did not quite know who her other clanmates were.

7-5-2019
Canary appeared thoughtful after listening to Rosaline’s story.

31515368p.png

“It must be something else, to have such surreal powers. Your story kind of reminds me of something Lady Lana did when she was younger- I heard that it was quite surreal as well! If I didn’t know any better, I could have sworn that Lady Lana could predict the future as well!”

It was Rosaline’s turn to be intrigued- The Guardian dragon could see the future, too?

30751365p.png

“It’s not seeing the future. It’s just careful observation of the past and present, and making predictions on the future based on the most likely outcomes. I’m hardly omniscient, Canary.”

31515368p.png

“Oh- But the stories always make you seem like you are! At the very least, you can tell us how you managed to predict the future to such an accurate degree!”

Lana was obviously conflicted. Her gaze fell upon Canary, who was brimming with hopefulness and anticipation. She turned towards Rosaline. The PearlCatcher signed that though she was interested in knowing the full story as well, she wouldn’t mind if Lana didn’t feel comfortable telling them.

With a sigh and a shake of her head, Lana began recounting her tale.

8-5-2019
Lana used to be a war tactician before she became the inn keeper of this little establishment in Starwood Strand.

Anywho, the picture Lana had painted appeared dire; Apparently, there had been three clans caught in-between a three-way war. In desperation, two of the weaker decided that it would be in their best interests to form an alliance in order to fight against the might of the third and strongest clan. One of these two smaller clans just so happened to be Lana’s.

Still, even with their combined numbers, their situation was dire. Their armies were continuously pursued by those from the largest clan, and a head-on confrontation would spell nothing less than complete and absolute defeat, and the responsibility of getting the two clans out of this trouble fell upon Lana when they found themselves flanked on three sides; two were blocked by large mountains, and the third was blocked by the army of dragons from the larger clan.

They could either attempt to fight the larger army, though everyone seemed to know that would be the worst case scenario had it happened. Or, they could attempt to flee through the small ravine in between the two mountain ridges, but that would create a bottleneck where the enemy could easily charge and attack them from the rear.

And Lana had to figure out a solution to their current predicament.

9-5-2019
Lana’s solution was surprisingly simple. As the dragons from both factions hunkered down, the Guardian dragon began watching the skies tediously, tasting the air for any change in moisture or temperature. None of the other dragons appeared to have realized, however, and this would be what had laid the groundwork which fueled the rumours of Lana being supposedly omniscient.

When the Guardian dragon observed the change she wanted, she told all the dragons to leave the camp and make a run for the ravine and, on her signal, climb as far as they could onto the walls of the mountain and hunker down. Her clan leader was confused, and rightly so, but Lana managed to convince him that she indeed had everything under control.

The order was given, and as soon as the opposing faction noticed that their combined armies were retreating, they began their pursuit… Just as Lana had expected.

As their two armies were halfway into the ravine, with their enemy closely on their tail, nearly catching up to them. Lana gave the signal again, and the dragons from their army began to clamber up the walls. This made the enemy army pause, clearly confused by the strange display. But that was what Lana had planned for, too.

The sky rumbled and crackled, and bolts of spiraling electricity danced across the dark clouds. A sudden harsh downpour began, and without a warning, a water began filling the deep ravine; Lana had predicted a flash flood from observing the sky and air around her.

The water swept away the pursuing army. In a single act, Lana had saved their two combined clans from complete annihilation.

10-5-2019
Rosaline stayed at the inn for several more days. It was quite nice, getting to listen to some of Canary’s and Lana’s stories both of those surrounding the inn and the small snippets of their past. Occasionally, Rosaline would share her own as well, and it was good to have someone who knew sign language to translate for her so she wouldn’t have to write everything down tediously.

On one particular day, the PearlCatcher did notice something strange. The leaves on the Starwood trees appear to be changing in colour. It wasn’t like anything Rosaline had ever seen before, so she decided to ask Canary and Lana about the strange sights. Upon hearing her concern, Canary expression turned to one of sadness. Lana retained her usual stoicism.

30751365p.png

“Rosaline… Though not many dragons at the inn end up staying, they tend to know when they make their departure from the inn.”

Judging from Canary’s reaction, Rosaline caught onto what Lana was implying; Does that mean she could leave Starwood Strand if she so choose?

The PearlCatcher made her way to the inn’s entrance, followed by Canary and Lana, where she quickly discovered that there now appeared to be a clear path, unobstructed by mist, leading out from the inn. She turned to the two other dragons. Thought she was reluctant, Rosaline knew that she had to leave. Those in her clan were bound to be worrying about her whereabouts.

31515368p.png

“I really enjoyed your company, Rosaline, even if you, uh, you know, couldn’t really talk. I don’t mind, though. Maybe when you go back to your clan, you can write us some letters? A-anyways, please… Take this as my parting gift to you.”

Lana stepped forth once Rosaline received Canary’s gift.

30751365p.png

“You are quite a unique dragon. Thank you for listening to our stories. I wish you well on your future endeavors. Please take this as my gift to you.”

Rosaline nodded her thanks to both dragons, giving them a smile before turning and went through the gates of the inn, following the path out of the woods.
