Lithium watched. He observed. And he learned.

He knew Hydrogen was smart. Almost as smart as their father, he thought. She devoured books. Poured over the lab manuals. Anything that was written down she’d read. And memorized. And internalized.

Helium was strong. She pushed and shoved her way into getting her way. But she never really hurt her siblings. And she’d jump to their defences the moment one of the lab technicians grew terse with any of them.

And Beryllium was always trailing after their father, themselves, or the lab technicians. He’d offer to carry papers, equipment. Or he’d be reminding everyone to take a break and eat something, tiny wrapped sandwiched held in a crumpled bag.

As for himself, he stayed out of people’s way. Rarely spoke to anyone that wasn’t his family. But he learned. He knew when to press the night guard. Knew when to casually mention the secretary to the new assistant. Knew when to outright threaten the herbalist.

While his father ran the lab, Lithium ruled it. And he relished the power he held. The power of information and the will to use it.
