BACKGROUND
Ciénega, like many bogsneaks, wasn't born one. Instead, he hatched as a nocturne to a small clan dwelling in the Snowsquall Tundra. Unfortunately for him, though, that was just about the most normal thing that happened to him, since he had the bad fortune to only hatch a couple of days after the mutagen was discovered, and to a clan that was more interested in science than its hatchlings.

So of course he got the dubious honor to be the first of his clan to be placed into the cauldron. They brought him to their sample of the mutagen, exposed to the biting ice and wind outside of his den, and let him fall into the liquid. A kid, maybe, but there are some things you don't forget -- like the pain, not knowing what was happening, not wanting it, feeling his bones and skin and muscle, still hatchling-soft, shift and stretch to fit a new form. Let the liquid sink into his skin, so when they pulled him, shivering and crying, from the bubbling mess there was nothing left that might have been recognizable as a nocturne; a new bogsneak, claws gleaming bright blue from the cauldron.

They took him, dripping hissing liquid onto the snow, to the laboratory. With familiars, and other dragons. And that was where he stayed, all the way through his childhood, until he was an adult, even -- being poked and prodded by the scientists, tested, an experiment and a template for the rest of the bogsneaks that would come. A tool.

Eventually, one gets tired of that. And after that long, after you keep your eyes and ears open -- you learn enough, there's always an opportunity. Ciénega knew how to use his wit, and fake a bit of charm, even then.

They were already using him. Wanted to see, among so many things, how smart bogsneaks could be. So he let them. And for more it was simple to steal books and little bits of important information from the scientists, when they started humoring him. When he stopped fighting back. Gradually he went from being able to conjure barely enough magic to conceal a scratch to enough to project a dragon -- and more. And from there, it was simple.

Oh, he certainly could have snuck out. But that would be too easy for them -- for what they'd done. And when he could use ice magic just as well -- safe enough to say there weren't many dragons left when he was done. Certainly not his mother and father.

He left his clan in ruins, his fellow test subjects to escape on their own, and flew as far and fast as any bogsneak could. The shores of the Tangled Wood were where he finally landed for safety, and a conversation with some passing traders hitched him a ride across the sea to Sierra Grove.

PERSONALITY

Out of everyone in the Grove, Ciénega is, if not the most aggravating to deal with, certainly up there. He's fiercely intelligent, but surprisingly he's not that arrogant; if anything he hides that all behind wry wit and a poisonously sarcastic tongue. He takes delight in misinterpreting anything he can and generally making a nuisance of himself, complete with a wink and a silver-smooth way of talking. Well, when he bothers.

There's a healthy dose of cynicism there, too -- certainly a result of the way he was created, not that anyone really knows about it. Despite it he rarely loses his temper; when he does, though, it's like a thunderstorm, and it's best to stay out of his way. He has an impressive hold on his ice-magic, rivaling that of the Grove's mages, despite his refusal to specialize in that field.

He's actually, as long as you're not demanding he do things or prying into his business, generally likable. Quite sympathetic, too -- though only when he's loyal to someone, and that involves a lot of trust first, and a lot of things done for him. Frequently he only does things out of self-interest, and that's very much his primary motivation.

He might not be exactly arrogant but he's both self-assured and very proud of his achievements, even though he feels the need to exaggerate everything he's done to a ridiculous extent and downplay everyone else involved while he does so. He's prone to boasting and never seems particularly afraid of anything; any threat is only going to get apathy in response.
