RCjzTUK.png THE LOREKEEPERS
tumblr_inline_o21bn2e4fq1r3lvtf_400.png
For the longest time, The Lorekeepers were not respected within The Abandoned as a tribe or clan. Instead, their dwindling numbers and their focus on prose, legends, and history had them marked as a “club” by the cults and warbands that comprised the majority of the coalition. However, their knowledge of history and Sornieth history proved helpful in keeping them all in one piece, granting them a rather lofty status among the clans. They’re liked well enough by even the shiftiest of clans and delight in talking to even the most grotesque of its members. Some dragons theorize--if not for their charisma--some of the Abandoned wouldn’t know anything about one another at all.

ESTHER
"Oh, dear. I’m just here to help."

According to Esther’s mothers, they found her egg sitting on the side of a well-worn merchant trail in the Sunbeam Ruins. Unable to have children of their own, they gladly took it back to their nest to hatch, believing it was a gift from the Lightweaver. They incubated it, coddled it, and lorded over it until it hatched, thrilled to pieces when her flat, bat-like nose poked itself from the shell. Esther was their daughter, a daughter they were never supposed to have, and they were going to make sure she had a life other dragons could only dream of.

She received the best education in scholarly and magical studies. She went to every festival and carnival that popped up in the Ruins. They took her with them to faraway lands to learn the cultures and ways of the other Flights, never failing to bring her home with whichever souvenirs she wanted. They fed her the finest foods, lavished her with attention, and tended to her every whim.

Surprisingly, she didn’t grow up to be spoiled. Showing remarkable maturity for a young dragon, Esther realized how fortunate she was to lead such a privileged life, and dedicated herself to paying it forward. Acts of kindness when she was a child blossomed into extreme acts of charity as an adult. She found herself with no shortage of friends, a proud family, and a clan and community that regarded her as a paragon of virtue.

It was… tiring.

Esther’s decision to leave for Dragonhome mostly came about because of a desire to escape unwanted attention, though she explained it away as wanting to help dragons in need in less fortunate parts of Sornieth. Of course, she didn’t really believe the desert lands of Dragonhome were actually worse off and neither did her mothers (who seemed to catch onto what was really going on), but the other Light dragons were touched. They were sad to see her go, but wished her off with waves of their veils and words of pride.
It’s by chance that she wound up with The Lorekeepers, having stopped for a rest near their lair. After striking up conversation with Fracture, their leader, she came to realize just how much suffering the area had gone through and how much help they needed in the wake of a great cataclysm they simply called “The Incident.” Brushing off her scales and offering a polite smile, she suggested that maybe she could stay and help. She wasn’t sure what she could bring to the table, but she was willing to learn whatever they could teach her that needed to be done.

PERSONALITY
With the exception of Absinthe, Esther is perhaps the kindest and gentlest of all The Lorekeepers. She is genuinely generous, careful with her words, and always eager to help wherever she can. What she lacks in practical skill, she makes up for with a positive attitude and good will. Adjusting to a life of labor after being pampered since her hatching is difficult, even scary, but she knows that claws have to get dirty to make real positive change in the world.

Where her and Absinthe differ is in Esther’s inability to suffer dragons of a crueler persuasion, especially if they are targeting the weak and defenseless. Though not skilled in combat of any sort, her mothers taught her the art of shaming, meaning that even though she couldn’t put a dent in a Fae’s hide, she talk an Imperial into a puddle of guilt. It comes as a shock to many since she is normally so soft spoken that she has to be asked to raise her voice in order to be heard.

An educated dragon, Esther adores more refined pursuits and is an avid artist, poet, and reader. She collects books and keeps journals, enjoys leaf and gravestone rubbings, and has a desire to one day become a painter, a vinter, and a dozen other things that fall in with her varied interests. Older dragons like to laugh that she is the epitome of the “jack of all trades” quip, being a master at none of her hobbies, but she brings a little culture and class to The Abandoned that they would otherwise lack.

At least that’s what her mothers say when they answer her letters home.
