Sandscatch Done

Most dragons would find a lone hatchling wandering the Tangled Woods by his lonesome as irresponsible on the part of the parents, but the healers that found he described the situation as … odd. The small Tundra fared them no more than he would a field mouse, yet it took the group no time at all to learn that the boy did not know what most of them where. A tad more probing proved that the Tundra knew even less about where he had come from, or where he was. With no where to go, Silvereye easily convinced the hatchling to come home with them.

She quickly passed him off to Sunspot and his mate Starryskys. While many dragons where weary of the choice, and Midnight objected loudly, Silvereye though it was the best solution for all. Starrysky had lost her last clutch of hatclings to a rogue Beastclan patrol that had come to close to there nesting grounds. Even though Sunspot hunted down to patrol, and made examples of them it was to late. The damage was done. She’d been depressed ever since, but the little Tundra that helped her come out of her shell again. She named the little one Sandscratch because of his dust colored fur.

While the small Tundra now had a family and clan to call his own, it was far from perfect in his eyes. After a few short days the clan realized why the dragon was abandoned: he was a mind reader. Not in the literal since like Dawnbreak, and Nightfall where, but he noticed the little things dragons did. Every mindless swish of the tail, glance to the side, and sharp intake of breath allowed Sandscratch to make an educated guess on what the others around him where thinking, and nine times out of ten he was right. After it became common knowledge most of the hatchlings and even the older dragons shied away from him. The only two dragons that didn’t mind as much where Starrysky, who saw it as a special gift, and Sunspot who though it was a valuable asset for a warrior. Even though his family accepted his oddity that didn’t mean Sandscratch gravitated to them. Starrysky was far too restricting, and Sunspot held him to a high personal slandered. The only person who expected nothing from him was his ‘sister’ Lust, but Sandscratch would not go anywhere near her for his own safety. For the most part Sandscratch was happy to just sit in the background and watch the others move around him. It was his carful observation of one such group of hatchlings that lead to the discovery of his first best friend, Kala.

The young Mirror tested everyone’s patience, even Silverey’s, with her lack of vocalization. Even if this was natural for her breed, the Coven had little to no interaction with Mirrors since the fall to the first Shadowwing. However, when Sandscratch and the Mirror where alone he found she would respond in a kind of sign language. She only ever spoke if expressing an idea or noun. It was only a few days before Sandscratch was able to carry on whole conversations with Kala. To most onlookers the conversations would seem completely one sided, but he cared little. Kala was one of the only dragons that never shied away from his ‘mind reading’. The two stayed close friends even after their fields of study pushed them down different paths. While Kala spent most of her time in the library with Tigerlilly organizing the clans many documents, Sunspot had insisted Sandscratch learn the art of combat. He picked it up quickly but he “never had his heart in it”, at least according to Sunspot any way. The young dragon preferred the fine art of tracking, and hunting to his father’s battle training.

Often, when he didn’t want to put up with battle practice, Sandscratch would wake up early and sneak out with his cousin’s hunting party. Sandscratch was weary of the older dragon, since when he was a hatchling Midnights behavior toward him could be defended as downright cruel. Though as years passed the Noc’s feelings seemed to change from hatred to a kind of tolerance. When Midnight would notice that Sandscrtch had joined their group, instead of sending him back, he would pair the Tundra with some of the younger hunters in the group. This always gave Sandscratch hope that perhaps Midnight did have faith in him, as the youngest hunters where always paired with the best to act as a role model.

Eventually it was even decided that Sandscratch would take over the hunting patrols from Midnight, as the latter hated the chore. Even though he was far younger than most of the dragons under his command, Sandscratch held himself with confidence, and in kind so did everyone else. Under Sandscratch’s guidance the hunting groups have become far more organized, now having leaders, members, and apprentices, as well as more versatile.
