Biography

Solaris

Latin, of the sun

Born on the same day as what the adults would later call “The Great Eclipse,” Solaris grew up on stories of the time when the moon traveled across the sky to block out the sun. The stories always bothered her, not out of the fear the adults had felt when it was actually happening, but because the idea of anything being able to so completely obscure the brilliant light of the sun offended her. It was the greatest source of warmth and light in existence; how could such a puny, pale blob obstruct it?

When she was old enough to leave on her Search, she traveled through many regions, yet no matter where she went she couldn’t seem to find her Charge. Eventually she realized why she was having so much trouble pinning down its location: her Charge wasn’t on the surface where she’d been endlessly combing, but hanging high in the sky above her.

Her Charge was the sun itself.

Obviously unable to make the journey to the surface of the sun, Solaris settled for watching the skies for anything that might have the audacity to threaten her shining Charge. If clouds or storms lasted too long, she would fly through them with powerful beats of her wings, unbothered by the strong winds and incredible heights she’d have to surpass to confirm that her Charge remained unharmed.

She especially kept a watch on the treacherous moon when it appeared every evening, ever vigilant to ensure it stayed on its own course and didn’t attempt to usurp the sun’s place while it set for the night. She was always ready to leap into the air if need be and chase away the moon if it showed any signs of rebellion.

Under her watch, nothing would challenge the sun.
