8v0FNRM.png 		Penumbra hatched on the most curious of days; the clear sky darkened at midday, causing worried whispers to race through his clan. Was the sun going out, they wondered? Had the Lightweaver and Shadowbinder gone to war? Surely not, they told themselves. Yet still they remained concerned until the sky lightened again and had remained that way until the usual time the sun set. The next day many of them kept glancing at the sky nervously, making sure the heavens were behaving as they should be.

They later learned it had been an eclipse, but most of them still felt unsettled by the event. The clan hadn’t been in the path of totality, but they were close enough to have experienced an all-encompassing shadow falling across the land from a cloudless sky, and that memory unnerved them.

Penumbra was too young to remember any of it, but he heard the stories of what happened. He liked knowing he was born on such an exceptional day, and as he grew older he would often go out at dusk and imagine that it was actually earlier in the day and the darkening sky was due to an eclipse.

Other dragons didn’t really understand his fascination with the evening sky, but that didn’t bother him. He would always find the best spot to watch the sunset and settle down to bask in the warm glow, soaking in the view of the fading light as the advancing shadows overcame it and wistfully accepting that this was as close as he would likely ever come to experiencing another eclipse.
