He was nigh unrecognizable when he finally stumbled back through the gates of the Coterie.

It'd been 2 long years since they lost him on the wrong side of a storm. Kukui was barely able to hold onto her land with the members she still had, much less assemble any kind of search party. They held a service for those they had lost when rebuilding efforts had finally concluded.

Story by Karika
Aquilo sat quietly and watched as the dragons of the Coterie moved around him. He was a part of them, but sometimes he found his mind drifting, flashes of memory running through his head of a time when he had been ripped apart by a storm, piece by piece. He had been found again and he was safe now, but sometimes his mind didn't think that he was.

He curled his tail in around himself, huddling while trying to give the appearance of contentment. He didn't want the others to worry about him. He was fine, he was. He just needed a moment to remember who he was, and that he had a purpose in this place, the Coterie.

As he shifted he felt a tightening in his wings. They were heavier now when they had once been so sensitive. He'd once used their power to propel him forward on his hunts. Now they were encased in ice, and such movements made him fear that they would shatter and leave him scarred forever.

There was ice in his heart that reached out and clouded his mind when he let it, but he fought it. He knew the stories of the Ice sculptures and what became of those unfortunate dragons. He refused to let their fate become his as well.

Shaking off such morose thoughts, he moved to join the others. He was a part of the clan here. Arancia had found him and brought him back home again. Things had changed in the time he had been gone, both with him and with all of them, but he knew that he could find his place again, even if he was not the same dragon that he used to be. He knew that he just needed a little time to adjust and find his way.

At least he had discovered that he could be of help finding food for the Coterie. It did not take a lot of energy to hunt prey, and he found that it calmed his mind to do so, collecting meat and dragging it back so that his clan could be fed. He liked hunting with the others, having their strength surrounding him as they stalked their prey. He liked not being alone anymore, and having somewhere to belong.

The others were preparing another hunting trip as he mused, and he found he was eager to participate. He made an effort to lighten his mood as he reached them, joining in on their conversation, doing his best to smile and laugh alongside them.

They all knew what he had been through, they understood and did not hold his reserved behaviour against him. They still accepted him as one of them, despite everything he had been through. He valued them for that, more than he could ever tell them with his words and actions.

A smile touching his heart, he set out with the group to hunt for food.

They'd been out on the hunt for a while when he heard the sound. He had been focused on the movement in the bushes some distance ahead of him, stalking what he was pretty sure was an Ermine. As he prepared to launch himself into a position to strike, an awful sound rose up, shattering the silence and startling his prey into action.

Being the seasoned hunter that he was, Aquilo didn't let the distraction rob him of his kill. He moved fast, catching the Ermine mid-air and making quick work of it. Only then did he turn his attention to the source of the sound that had triggered some memory inside of him. He knew that sound. He had made it himself on more than one occasion in his time alone. Something was in pain, and he couldn't leave the cry unanswered, not when he knew how it felt to be alone and hurting.

It didn't take long for him to find the winter wolf, its torso hopelessly tangled in the thicket, thorns digging into its sides and gouging its fur. Aquilo didn't know where its pack was or how it had come to be there, but in that moment none of those questions mattered to him. All he knew was that it was alone and in pain, and he was in a position to help it.

He dropped the Ermine to the snow and made quick work of the brambles, taking care not to cause further damage with their removal. The wolf remained tense the whole time, as if preparing to be attacked, though Aquilo had no such thoughts in his mind. When the winter wolf was free it stood panting, its injured legs shaking with the effort to hold its weight, the thought of fleeing at the forefront of its mind.

Aquilo nudged the Ermine towards the wolf, and then gave it his back and walked some distance away, showing that he was no threat. He lay down and watched as the winter wolf staggered over to the food and sank to the ground, eating with gusto.

It was there that Aquilo's friends found him some time later, when they were done with their own hunt. He and the wolf, having long since finished his meal, lay on opposite sides of the clearing, staring at each other, their eyes communicating a level of understanding that only those who had lived under certain circumstances could understand.

As the rest of the group came to find him, Aquilo watched the wolf stand and limp into the brush without a backwards glance over its shoulder.

Aquilo smiled and led the way back to the Coterie.
