Aelfyrnek Silent - Mysterious - Loyal  There was a time when the world dimmed, and dragons realised the sun was not alright. For though it rose in the morning, the world stayed as dark as night. They cried out to the sun, begging for its light. But the sun did not answer, and the world was no more bright. Just as the dragons despaired, the darkness answered their call. They said to let the sun rest, for it strained one to brighten all. This was not a tragedy, it said, but a day of celebration and rest - for there would be no beautiful summer, if the winter's snow did not take its effect. So instead of a day of grieving, dragons celebrated the eclipse. Songs praising the sun's work flowed sweetly from their lips. And when the sun heard their songs of worship, there was gladness in its heart. And it decided that in response, it would give them the blessings of the dark. And thus a penumbral magic was born, from one tired and work-worn. This magic rained gently down upon the earth, and settled on a hatchling as it was birthed. This hatchling had already been special, born from a mage and a falling star. And with the blessing of the sun, it was sure to go quite far. Yet light and glory and honour were not things the young dragon wished. It preferred the darkness, and bathed in the shadows of the eclipse. It longed to merge within the shadows, and not shine bright over the seven seas. For if the sun could hide behind the darkness, then perhaps so could they. And so they call it the Silent Fighter, the one who befriended the dark. They thought it strange that one so bright would have would refuse to leave a shining mark. There were those who judged it, and those who respected its choice. For like the sun, the dragon knew that in the dark there was rejoice. For the darkness was a comfort, a hiding place from the world so blinding bright. And sometimes all it took to get yourself back together - was simply to turn off the shining light. |
