Keeper of the Glass Spire

I wish I could step back into the silence,
let the world wash over me like water over a pebble.

blankblank Dusan felt he had been born of the Witchwood. With wings of black ice, dark woody antlers, and eyes of piercing white, it made almost perfect sense for him to become a Keeper once he had matured enough to do so. The Court of the Glass Spire was known for taking in dragons of blue and white hues, so that they might blend in well with the forest once stepping into the mirror world. Dusan embodied this well, he knew, and although it was not a necessity it certainly aided him in his efforts.

In the mirror realm, the Whispers were the greatest threat. They were souls of the dead, the lost, the forsaken. They were full of hate and rage and longing to eradicate life, for it was the warmth they desperately craved yet could never have. The Keepers, meanwhile, sacrificed that warmth so that they would have the blighted magic required to dismantle each Whisper one by one. The Witchwood always seemed to birth more, and so their efforts went around and around.

A fae, Dusan was small and slight enough to both pose as a problem and a benefit. When a Whisper seemed to melt out of one of the glassy trees, skeletal bones visible through a transparent body made of ice so cold it left a trail of white smoke, it seemed frightfully large in comparison to the slight fae. Yet Dusan, with quick flitting wings, was always able to dart in and around the Whisper, to work his magics and shatter the creature before it could react in any truly violent way.

It was mindless work, at least for Dusan. He had always been considered emotionless, even amongst the fae. It was easy to let the magic run its course through him, to snuff out any fear or dread that the Whispers might otherwise make him feel. Dusan was a Keeper, and the forest was his to protect. The creatures the Witchwood conjured up would never eclipse Dusan’s own ability to chill a room.

There was little left in the fae of the hatchling he’d been, raised warm and protected within the comforting confines of Rekhanci’s previous home: a series of tunnels that had kept the budding clan protected, but had sheltered them too well from the truth of their tumultuous past. When the clan had risen above that past and the surface with it, Dusan had shed his own innocence to take responsibility for the land their clan claimed. It was an unforgiving one, both for being the frigid wastes of the Icefields, and for the vile evil that spilled out from the Witchwood.

And now he was its caretake, one of many. It brough relief to be responsible for such raw power, for something as life altering as the forsaken magic that the Witchwood emanated. It made Dusan feel like a thread in the tapestry of their kingdom, one dragon among many who kept it all from unraveling. What a glory it was.
