They've never known anything but belonging to Carolus-- His word has always been their law and gospel.
They are aware of why this is. They know that children are born of parents, that they are raised by families. That children without either have lost them, and they are under no illusions of how they came to belong to the cruel king.
If they could, they'd rip his throat out, but to what end? They know nothing but being obedient killers under his command. They have nowhere to go, no dreams of their own. If they do not have someone's rule to follow, then why are they alive?
If only another soul would reach for them...
