Biography

The following documents were recovered during the renewed Southeast Cairnstone dig. They are to be entered into the files on the Missing Village of [REDACTED].

HANDOVER DOCUMENTS-- DELIVER TO P[REDACTED], HEAD OF RESEARCH, SOUTHEAST CAIRNSTONE DIG

Any Head of Research who knows anything about anything has been lectured to nearly death about the Shattered Serpent. It’s another hokey curse story which comes with its own set of rituals and chants, which are to be performed should any fragment of a dragon’s corpse be recovered during a dig. It’s for the locals, you see-- otherwise they wouldn’t let us do our research.

I’ve been told that, as part of the handover documents for the Southeast Cairnstone dig, I must write up the origin of this tale as well as the necessary precautions, such that the new Head of Research does NOT have to listen to the paranoid dronings of some villager or other. It’ll make it easier to prove that we are taking the “appropriate measures” to protect the surrounding area from the Shattered Serpent.

This creature, whose name is unpronounceable in the original ancient draconic, is currently referred to as “Vinushka,” oftentimes only “The Shattered Serpent” for fear of drawing the creature forth by calling its name. It takes the form of a Spiral most often, occasionally an Imperial, and once a Coatl. It appears during excavation as neat fragments of skeleton, as though the dragon was sectioned neatly by a banana slicer in preparation for burial. Once one section is found, the other sections follow close behind, always in a convenient order (tail to head) and always in an approximately outward-moving spiral. Typically, limbs are found buried together in a separate location.

Should the first section be located, it must be placed in an airtight container and delivered to the Head of Research for disposal. The container must NOT be opened under any circumstances, and should be weighted (it’ll take a lot of weights-- most tend to wrap it up like a piece of candy in layers of cloth that are easily waterlogged) and sunk in the deepest land-locked body of water available: the leviathan trench. It CANNOT be carried by a third-party to this body of water-- the head of research must sink it themselves, while reciting the following incantation:

“Keeper of Secrets, Witch of Deception, here your knowledge is safe.”

Now, if it were up to me, I would just tell you to perform these actions and leave it at that, but I am required to attach a spooky ghost story to this document for no other reason than to prove you have been fully “immersed in local culture.”

The Legend of the Shattered Serpent

The problem with telling this as some sort of story is that Vinushka came from nowhere. She has no birth parents, no origin, no flight alliances and no predictable location. She has always been-- she frequently appears in ancient arts and legends from all flights. She is called Vinushka because it means “deception,” not because she herself has ever gone by this name. Everything about her is a mystery, and she has no beginning. But most dragons start the story here:

Every dragon has a secret. It doesn’t matter how small it is; a secret of any kind means a dragon must have been deceptive at least once in their lives. They dodged a question, told a white lie, or otherwise covered something up.

Most secrets are harmless. They never need to come to light, so they stay hidden without anyone’s knowledge. Vinushka is made of these secrets, and to survive she must always make more. The bigger the better. Telling your secrets makes her weak-- keeping secrets makes her strong.

When Vinushka “settles” somewhere, she is hunting for secrets. She sinks her teeth into a community and causes dragons to do things they must keep hidden. The more secrets she can create, the deeper she can settle.

When diggers arrive, they unearth her body, as well as her secrets. Many things will start to happen. Political leaders will find themselves neck-deep in scandal, relationships will end, dragons become withdrawn or reclusive. While all of this bad fortune might seem like a breeding ground for wickedness, it is not where Vinushka thrives.

When Vinushka fears that her well-being in in danger, she levels the town and moves on. Secrets are best kept by the grave, you see. She retains a modicum of strength and settles in a new town.

By sinking her remains, you are ensuring that the secrets are kept, and that she stays happy. The dragons are going to keep tiptoeing around each other and hiding things, but they will live.

It’s important to note that this information is largely confidential. This paper must, under no circumstance, find its way into the general public. Vinushka’s very existence is something of a secret, and the rage she would feel if her secret was released is frankly unimaginable.

Share this with no one. Give it to your successor when it is your time to leave. Do not acknowledge this document’s existence.
…..

Dear [REDACTED],

I found this document among the official records which were given to me during handover proceedings for the Southeast Cairnstone dig. It’s a very funny prank, but it should not have been included. Please be sure the previous Head of Research knows his documents are being tampered with.

Sincerely,

P[REDACTED]

Head of Research, Southeast Cairnstone dig
