"I often think that the night is alive and more richly colored than the day."
~Vincent Van Gogh

(Written by Aqualia)

The stand sat alone in silence. Any and every type of sound--the softest of whispers, the shrillest of screams, the most resonant of echoes--extinguished. It seemed to be a pocket in time: where the night was forever dominant, where the day was forever dimmed. Stars--stars everywhere--speckling the sky as if they were bio-luminescent creatures swimming in the mighty deep sea; glowing shrubbery growing rampant next to its frail-looking frame; brambles eating away at whatever remained of its battered lamps--still somehow pulsing with a steady, dusky nightshade hue of light. It was, you could say...haunted. Shrouded in eternal dusk. Bathed in eternal starlight and moonlight...and maintained by an eternal spell.

The first sound--the distant caw of a crow--in a while. Sunrise in the land (essentially what many in Sornieth would call sunset) was approaching. A shuffling noise. A scrape. A flutter...and the stand itself folded into the form of a coatl. In such a land, anything could be an illusion, after all. Quickly whisking a hat from the misty air around him onto his head, he began to tread through the mysterious space, a deck of cards weaving and bobbing about his body. It was time for him to work...to play a game. One step. Two steps. Three...and then he stopped abruptly at the shores of an eerie cyan swamp.

The high-pitched, hyena-like voice seemed to come from within it.
"Ah, Nyx. So you have come."

There was a squelch, a gurgle...and then the entire swamp dissipated beneath Nyx's feet. Another illusion. The only question now was, who--or what--would appear in the swamp's place?

A cackle, followed by an elegant loop of movement...and the lamplight-adorned horns of a spiral emerged from the gloom. "You really DID decide to challenge me, eh? For a promotion? A raise? You realize that if I win, you will be discarded from this guild, sir, and that in this land, a guild is your only chance at life? A loss for me will result in nothing harmful. That's how the game works--because life itself is unfair. Do you still want to proceed?" His eyes were crazed with an unsettling delight, as if he already had a trick up its talon to eject Nyx from his role. The jeering continued. "A card magician...who needs one these days?"

"You're. completely. disposable. Cards are old magic."
He lifted his twisted gaze to glare at Nyx. "You want to be something of use? Then become a shrouder, and help conceal these lands, or a chess player, and earn the guild some actual treasure."

The coatl's eyes glowed. "I stand by my challenge."

A smirk edged the spiral's lips. "Then SUFFER."

. . .

"Let it be known that Nyx has challenged Mist to a duel!"
The two glowered at each other, decks poised. "Whoever dispels the mist from his foe's set of cards and reads them first will win the match!"

Mist sneered. "Card magic won't help you here, will it, Nyx?"

"AND START!!!"

The spiral, being nimble and flexible, attempted to twist between Nyx's cards--and broke through.
"A king of clubs. A jack of hearts. An ACE OF SPADES. How ordinary, but commonplace of a low-rank like you, Nyx!"

A sudden blast of--well, mist--enveloped the area, subsequently causing the cards to disappear: a well-planned illusion. Mist tied himself into knots, clearly agitated that his pride had gotten to the better of him. Razor-like talons dug into the spiral's shoulders, followed by a soft, husky voice: "Who's really the low-rank? It may currently be me physically, but it will always be you in morals...and judging from the look of pure terror on your face that cannot be maintained through illusions alone, I'm going to go ahead and say that I've caught the real you."

Mist tensed, stunned.

"An ace of spades. A king of clubs. A jack of hearts." The coatl stared intently at his rival. "Hmm...interesting, don't you think? Calling me lowly when you have three of the exact same cards in your deck?"

"A queen of hearts. A 2 of diamonds..."

. . .

So the match ended.

Mist limped to his lair, head bowed in defeat. Nyx was promoted.
And yet Nyx still treated his colleague with respect long afterwards.

He may have been powerful. He may have been talented. He may have been cunning--but he would always, like the darkness shrouding his homeland, remain constant: Nyx...the humble.
