AN EXTINGUISHED FLAME

Hatched into a lone nest on the border of the Windswept Plateau and Ashfall Wastes, Apricot was one of the last eggs to break open. While her clutchmates all had some respectable hues of red and gold, her mother, Abnoba, took one look at her daughter's muddied scales and recoiled in disgust. Ashamed at laying an egg that would hatch such a dull colored coatl, Abnoba quickly picked up the small hatchling in her mouth, and flew away from her nest before any other dragons could see.

Traveling miles away from her nest, the bright feathered coatl spotted the Zephyr Steppes, where the peaceful breezes offered many young clans a safe space to nest. Swooping low to the ground, out of sight of the other dragons, Apricot's mother dropped the newly hatched dragon roughly into the weeds near the edge of the steppes before quickly swooping around and returning home, not once bothering to look back at her shame.

Chirping pitifully in the grass, egg sheen still on her downy wings, the small coatl gazed around at where she had been placed. The constant wind began to chill her scales, not having the warmth of a nest or her mother's internal flame to keep her safe. As the small hatchling continued to call out for her family, a large shadow slowly loomed above her.

Peering up with blurry, newly hatched eyes, Apricot saw what appeared to be a long, whiskered snout topped with two pearlescent horns. Squinting at the dragon's bright iridescent scales, Apricot uttered a soft, warbling peep. The pearlcatcher sighed, knowing it couldn't leave her here alone, yet still slightly bothered to have to carry an uncleaned hatchling. Placing his pearl in his mouth for safe keeping, the dragon daintily picked up Apricot in his claws before flying back home to his clan.

_AIR'S ALIGHT_

____Being raised in a multi-species clan presented its own sets of challenges for Apricot. Her surrogate mother, Stormwing, treated her with the same love as all of her adopted children. However, learning to enunciate and interpret the common language of traditional Draconic in place of her native Coatl song resulted in an odd, lilting manner of speech that is often hard to understand by those she first meets. And while she may have a better grasp at understanding other species than her fellow coatls, unless she focuses on the speaker the words still echo in her eardrums as nearly unintelligible tones.
