"Niven"
Niven's first memory was one of waking up in a dark cave looking up at a bunch of unhappy faces. Throughout his young life he heard many stories of how he arrived at the cave. First one said that he was rescued from a rival clan that ate their young. The second one told of how he was stolen as retribution for the theft of the life of one of the clan elders. The third story, and the one Niven liked best, stated that he was liberated from his birth clan. Niven liked big words and even though he didn't know the full meaning of the word, it sounded good to him. Unfortunately, no matter what story was told, this clan was not to be his home. Niven was quickly sold to another lair.
Niven liked this new lair. Everyone was friendly and kind, there were many other's like him here. For the first time in his young life he was well fed. This sense of belonging was soon shattered. Niven was told that this was just a small resting place before he went to his forever home. He was told not to worry, those that had dealings with this clan guaranteed that they would keep him and mold him into a useful member of his new clan. Niven was excited...unfortunately the word love was carefully missing from their promise.
Niven went to his new clan. When he arrived he was molded and changed into what he was told was the perfect dragon. The process was not painful it mostly involved drinking several nasty potions that the clan healer Jaylen had acquired for him. As Niven looked into a pool of water in the clan's healing chamber, even he had to agree how beautiful he looked. As Niven now stood in front of the clan leaders that did so much for him, he learned his fate. He would be an emissary for the clan, his price of freedom from this life was the life of his firstborn. Niven was floored, he did not speak let alone nod as he was led out of the chamber and on his way to his new home.
Niven was relieved that he would not be a courtier, which this his current clan did have several of, but fear of the unknown of being an emissary was daunting. Everyone knew that when you were in another clans lands you were subject to their rules and decisions. If the clan soothsayer said you were chosen to serve the gods right now than you did. The price of freedom though. Niven decided that he hated the word liberation after all; it meant no home, no friends, and no love. Niven made up his mind at that moment that he wouldn't have any children...he wanted them to know only love and not be liberated.
Niven arrived in Leaona and Jonathan's clan in a somber mood. He didn't really speak upon arriving just heading to the chambers he was given. Nivan went directly to bed. When Nivan got up in the morning he decided to stick by his resolve. He went to the clan meals, spoke only when spoken to, and participated in all required activities. It was not a glamorous life, but one he felt he could live and live well at. The only time he really let his wings down so to speak was when he worked with the kids at the bestiary. The smile one sees on the kids faces as they make that initial connection to a beast that they swear to take care of to be the best of friends with. He practically glowed in those moments.
Niven knew the price of his freedom and when the female dragons came around he turned away directing them in some case to those that truely loved them. Not that he didn't like the attention, but he wanted something more, he wanted love, a mate that would understand all of him. The only female that ever seemed to get him to open up and talk was Leaona. She was his secret dream if he would only admit it. He knew that she was unobtainable, but still a great friend and confidant. Niven was surprised the day she presented him with his very own Gloom-willow. These were pets reserved for only the best and those that put the needs of the clan above their own. He was greatly honored, although felt he didn't deserve it, but cherished this amazing gift.
