the lower deck is crowded, packed full of warm bodies, hot sweating skin and long untamed greasy hair, salt-stricken cloth rubbing against old bruises-- the crew gathers around, eager to catch a glimpse of their captain’s visitor-- their captain is mystery enough, a female pirate in the great age of exploration-- but even stranger is their captain’s guest, the woman who just appeared on the deck one night and passed out on the floorboards. she came to swinging, giving the first mate a nasty cut and knocking the captain’s cousin prone on the hot wet deck. they gave her her space, and some water, and brought her to meet their captain. from the first look, their leader was stricken. the stranger dressed in fine leather, though dusty and salty from travel, and had red cloth bound round her neck, wrists and ankles, where they were visible beneath her long coat. she had a high dark color to her cheeks and a devilish glint to her teeth when she flung her head back and laughed. the firelight danced in her cinnamon eyes. she tossed her white-feathered hat into the captain’s quarters as she kissed her backwards that night, and in the morning the ship was hers. she held it for only a week before she grew bored. she’d sit around tossing knives at the water barrels, lay on her back on the coils of rope just getting in the way, and eat everything in sight until the crew began to complain rather loudly to their captain. but she was smitten, and saw nothing wrong with her lover’s behavior. until the strange, beautiful woman staged a coup. on her own captured ship. she waved goodbye from the dinghy she’d stolen, dodging their thrown swords and feeble gunshots, and she blew a kiss to her slighted obsessor-- then she was gone, lost to the horizon. and good riddance |
