Lullaby distinctly remembers finding two sweetpuff friends, yet there's only one with her now. His name is Frog, and he is sleeping on an old brown cap that she found near the ledge where their nest was.

She found the puff nest last spring. She would spy on it from behind the crumbling stone walls of the old ruins, and as soon as both parents were gone, she'd scamper up to the ledge (the wind caused by wingbeats can sometimes disturb small nests) and peer at the five eggs nestled in the dry grass dome. The fourth day after she discovered the nest, she tried singing to the eggs. She must not have been very good, because after a few seconds there was an angry ragepuff parent clawing at her robes, and she fell off.

A few weeks later, in a dusky evening, she was catching insects in the garden with the stone statue. Her bruises had just healed. Very suddenly, and very dramatically, she remembered the nest. And she got the exhilarating hunch that the eggs might just have hatched by then. She stuffed the last few locusts she had caught into her face, and dashed to the ledge.

There was no sign of the parents, so she zipped up the stone and stuck her face into the nest opening. Instead of happiness, she found a sharp, stabbing pain in both her eyes, accompanied by a flurry of high-pitched squawking. Again, she tumbled down the stone. Three tiny azure balls of anger swirled around her face. It was all she could do to throw her mantle over her head, and hide under it until they went away.

When she poked her head out from under the cloth, there were two brown fluffs in front of her. One was staring straight at her, and making strange noises that made it sound more like a dragon hatchling than a bird. It seemed to be saying the words "cheep cheep tweet coo tweet."

Lullaby scooped it up. "You remember me!" she chirped, hopping up and down on her toes. "I sang to you! I sang to you and you remembered!"

Lullaby thinks about those days a lot, especially that last evening when she found Frog. She was so happy, and so excited, and she didn't feel so lonely.

"Where's your sister, Frog?" Lullaby whispers to him. "Are you lonely all by yourself here?" He's asleep, so he doesn't answer.

Her worst fear is that she somehow forgot his sister, and left her behind. She probably would have been alright; Lullaby was quite sure they were old enough to fly by then. But it just didn't seem like herself to have forgotten a whole entire bird-friend like that, even if she was just a little one.

She sighs. "You seem happy," she murmurs, fluffing up the little hat so that it wrapped up better around Frog. "I hope your sister is happy too, wherever she is."
