“Am I... alive?”

Alcor died years ago. A merchant by trade, he had been negotiating sales with a savage and wealthy clan when it came to light that the dragons had no interest in paying fairly for Alcor's wares. Hurting financially, but holding nothing against the clan, Alcor prepared to set off that night. The clan, however, felt entitlement to what they wanted, including most of Alcor's possessions. The relatively weak Pearlcatcher fought desperately for as long as he could. His attackers tossed him aside with relative ease, though; and when they had taken all they wanted and destroyed the rest they tormented the merchant who’d attempted to stop them. Alcor was bleeding, bruised, and barely conscious when the dragons left his crumpled form in the dust. As dawn broke, Alcor breathed his last breath.

At least for a while.

———

Alcor's body was found not long after by a doctor traveling to his new post at a facility in the Carrion Canyon. To a passerby it might have looked like pity, perhaps even sympathy or friendliness, when the Fae began to drag the larger dragon away from the rock against which he had been thrown. But it was nothing so kindly. The doctor saw in Alcor's body an opportunity for his research.
Alcor was intended to be a conglomeration of different experiments, a test dummy of sorts. Only when the Fae saw his new lab at the Canyon Home for Dangers to Sornieth did he decide to try something more ambitious.
Each modification the doctor made was carefully cataloged in journals Alcor would later read and weep over. Alcor was not fully revived for some time. Not even Alcor knows how he lives, as the doctor refuses to reveal his secrets. Alcor isn't sure he wants to know.
It took Alcor some time to remember his history. For some time he was even happy with his new life. The doctor acted as a father figure, even going so far as to call Alcor "son," as he had no name at the time. It is unlikely Alcor was ever intended to recover memories of his lost life. Once he did he was horrified by the experiments run on him, the desecration of his corpse, the large decrease in his standard of life.
Alcor was temporarily shut down. Without his mechanical implants he did not function, but his anger kept his mind seething. He abhorred the dragon whom he had viewed as family. The detestable Fae ran free, continuing his experiments on his patients, while Alcor collected dust in a closet.

It was not until after the restructuring of the Home that Alcor was restarted. The doctor himself had been institutionalized. The Home was once again viewed as a place of openness and healing, despite the cells and guards. Alcor was found when a young intern was cleaning out the old lab. In a closet behind some boxes Alcor sat. He was covered in dust and moth eaten blankets. The intern, a pretty young Ridgeback, restarted Alcor by accident. Thinking at first he was a statue, she brushed some dust off his head, only to see his eyes open once she touched him.
Alcor's first response was to attack the Ridgeback. He did not harm her badly as she immediately fell back in terror. Too angry to feel remorse, Alcor leapt from his closet prison with mechanically enhanced legs to find the doctor who had done this to him. Instead he, after much convincing, found himself in an infinitely better situation.
Although he is not free to roam, Alcor is treated well. He does not eat and requires minimal sleep, so he spends most of his time pacing. With more help from the pretty young intern and his fellow patients than his doctor, Alcor is regaining his friendly personality.
