~ ~ ~ A B O U T The sand hissed. Serpentine and scalding to the touch, hours spent shifting and sliding in the solid sunshine, unfiltered and merciless. One’s flesh could burn if not careful. One is warned to seek shade where possible, and wait for dusk to seek warmth. There was no kindness in the sand, only lessons to be learned through the mistakes of others, visages of failure in unmarked stones stretching the endless expanse of terrain. She was not one to heed warnings. On the old wood of a ruin, she would whisk herself down the sand dunes, surfing the slopes as the wind stung her cheeks, specks of sand scratching her skin as they were drifted up like ash. She stood on the wooden piece, with the gold on her body bursting to life in a mesmerising mirage, streams of blue fluttering behind her like the wings of a bird, as if a bursting waterfall clung to her, a life of its own. Her movements were that of true flight, skimming the sand in short jumps, the speed unwavering as she darted across the desert with ease. The markings on her body were not those of scars, but of power. Ones that shifted, and rippled to life as her fingers outstretched, bursts of light bubbling from her fingertips and onto the sand. Something large underneath would utter a thunderous groan, and heed her beckoning. Creatures of stone, slithering underground. Their bed in which to rest, disturbed by the creature above, who smiled lovingly at the sand and listened to their ancient calls. To her, it was her playground. Even as the travelers passed, she would play, spinning on the wooden board and playing tricks, whips of blue to confuse the passersby. To them, she was a thing. A legend. Stories passed down from generation to generation, of a dancing nymph who flew the sands and ensnared those who wandered into certain peril. She would lull one in with promises of water and treasure, only to leave one to perish. She could not control who chose to follow. But they feared her. She was an omen. And her playground became hunting grounds, as her freedom to fly the sands grew into a desperate need to run away, dashing from place to place. She could no longer hear the ancient stones beneath her. She was frightened, and she had heeded a warning too late. ~ ~
