B I O G R A P H Y
Solarstone and Hymarao looked down at their son with combined joy and wonder. From the moment his egg had cracked and his round, green eyes peered up at them, his parents knew he was perfect… “You’re not good enough.” The words hit Karluk like a punch to his solar plexus, rendering him breathless. He had repeated these venomous words to himself several times since waking up. It had only been an hour. “No one wants you around,” the mental narrative continued, “ no one would even care if you left or died”. Not good enough… the mantra of hate had coursed through Karluk’s mind ever since he could remember. He didn’t know why he thought this way but he truly believed that he couldn’t prevent such thoughts from fouling his mind and ruining his mood. He should have been happy, his parents showered affection and praise upon him and he was never in want for anything, but instead, he felt unworthy and miserable. In the past, he combated these feelings with seeking assurance from his parents, his relatives, and his friends. Initially, they would respond adamantly that they loved him, that he was wonderful, but the responses became curter the more he asked. Eventually, Karluk became afraid to ask for fear that he would annoy his loved ones.

Karluk’s days grew darker, his fear of rejection and self-loathing made it difficult to interact with his clan. In fact, he rarely left his cave, spending most days lying in bed, toxic thoughts coursing through his mind. After a particularly dark day, Karluk made a decision, a decision that would change his life… Without a word, he left his clan, stealing away in the dead of night. He didn’t pack any supplies, knowing with grim certainty that he would soon perish from hunger, thirst, or exposure. He would die alone, out in the wilderness, minimizing any burden placed on his family. Choosing to travel northward, Karluk flew until his wings grew weary. When he could no longer fly, he walked, and when he could no longer walk, he crawled. Finally, his tired body ceased its sluggish pace and he collapsed upon the earth. With bleary eyes, Karluk surveyed the landscape that would become his eternal resting place. The winds and bamboo forests of his childhood home had long disappeared, replaced with strange crystal peaks. Melancholy and regret overtook Karluk’s heart; oh, how he missed his family and home. A single tear rolled from his eyes as his world faded to black. *** While unconscious, Karluk was discovered by Irushia who brought him back to her clan and nursed the delirious spiral back to health. Upon regaining consciousness, Karluk burst into tears, not knowing how else to express the turbulent array of emotions he was feeling. Recognizing a fellow unfortunate soul, Irushia welcomed Karluk with open arms. The relationship between the two dragons quickly grew and soon, they were steadfast friends and lovers

P E R S O N A L I T Y
Irushia’s gentle and loving soulmate, Karluk has an open heart and is willing to give anyone a second third, or fourth chance. His forgiving nature is often mistaken for naivety but is actually a result of his high levels of empathy. Irushia sometimes jokes that Karluk experiences emotion more deeply than the dragon he is empathizing with. Karluk's empathetic abilities have made him quite popular with his fellow clan mates who turn to him when they are in need of a listener and a shoulder to cry on. In fact, ironically, Karluk has become something of a counselor to many. Because of his high emotional intelligence, Karluk also experiences bouts of depression, acting as a bleak reminder of his past. During his darker days, Irushia is a soothing presence, easing his mind just by spending time with him. Sometimes they curl up together for hours, simply enjoying one another’s company. Karluk is also very protective of his children, almost to the point of stifling them. Whenever a hatchling choses to leave the clan, whether to join another clan or to serve the Arcanist, Karluk is deeply saddened. He wishes that all of his children would choose to remain in his loving embrace forever yet he also understands why it is important for them to lead their own lives.
