Bali Myna
Also known as the Bali Starling, Rothschild's Myna, or Jalak Bali
Critically Endangered
Zoo Article
_________________________________________________________
Bali Myna, also spellt "Bali Mynah," can be known as Bali Starlings, Rothschild's Myna, or by their native name, Jalak Bali. Bali Myna are native to the island of Bali in Indonesia, but currently exist only in the Bali Barat National Park and zoos around the world. Wild numbers are estimated to be in the hundreds as of 2016, while around a thousand exist in captivity. Little is known about wild populations, including nesting habits and life span.
Bali Myna were trapped and kept as pets in extreme numbers after their discovery in 1911, and in 2001, an estimated six were left in the wild. Zoo breeding and pet release programs have been taking place since then, but scientists are unaware of how many of these released birds survive to reproduce. Natives will still trap these birds and sell them in the pet trade, and human habitat is an ever-present threat.
If you ever see a Bali Myna (eggs, hatchling, adult) for sale, DO NOT buy it as a pet. If you are already in possession of a Bali Myna, please contact your zoo and ask if they know of any release/rehabilitation programs. These birds are critically endangered, and though beautiful, should remain in their natural habitat.
It is possible that once wild populations are self-sufficient enough, captive breeding for pets may return. But as of 2017, such programs are illegal.
