Class Hierarchy

Order of the Drake

Drake of Breathing Roots
The highest ranking drake in the clan, this honor can be claimed by any other drake, from within the clan or an outsider via single combat.

Sovereign of Breathing Roots
Mate or partner to the Drake, appointed by the Drake at the time of his victory over the lord before. This dragon is the equal of the Drake socially, but relies entirely upon their continued reign. If the Drake is defeated, this dragon becomes a Wyrm of the Bonded Order and serves the next Sovereign of Breathing Roots till death.

Honored of the Drake/Sovereign
Hatchlings or dragons claimed as kin by the Drake or the Sovereign. This may include sires, dams, siblings, offspring (legitimate, adopted, or illegitimate), or closely bonded friends/companions.

Scales of the Protectorate

Guardian of the Protectorate
A title given to the guardian sworn to protect the Order of the Drake for so long as the sitting Drake reigns. The title is non-transferable, lifelong, and ends only upon the death of the guardian. This title is only held by one dragon within the clan at any point in time, and is always granted to a member of the guardian breed. This dragon is bonded to the station of leadership and not to any specific Drake. Subsequently, they will not interfere in disputes of succession. This dragon has command of the protectorate wing of the clan when Rabaga is called, but is otherwise obligated to follow the command of the Drake.

Magus of the Protectorate
Warrior dragons who favor the magical arts, and who act as protectors of the Breathing Roots. They guard its inhabitants, its earth, its skies, and all beings and beasts who are welcomed there within. They are not a militia or a policing force, and act only via their own will unless Rabaga is called, during which they have sworn to protect the clan at the word of the Guardian.

Plaid of the Protectorate
Warrior dragons who favor the physical arts, and act as protectors of the Breathing Roots. They guard its inhabitants, its earth, its skies, and all beings and beasts who are welcomed there within. Above all, they follow the command and word of the Guardian. They are not a militia or a policing force, and act only via their own will unless Rabaga is called, during which they have sworn to protect the clan at the word of the Guardian.

The Wyrm Order

Wyrm of Preeminent/First Order
A title held by dragons who have been granted the highest status among wyrms, this title is given by the Drake or Sovereign, at their pleasure, and can be revoked at the same pleasure. Past holders of this title have included: political allies, mistresses or illicit lovers, illegitimate and unclaimed offspring, influential merchants, trusted advisors, counselors, and one very fortionate thief.

Wyrm of Ancestral Order
Dragons who were born into a nest of a high ranking pair, these are dragons born of the clan, and stand high in its social order from the day of their hatching.

Wyrm of Scholarly Order
Dragons who serve as officials within the clan, chronologists, healers, learned dragons, the aggregate, and the like are all included. Elected and ordained members of the Council of Wyrms assume this position when granted their place on the council.

Wyrm of Middling/Second Order
The middle class of the clan. This title is held by laborers, merchants, makers, brewers, healers, herbalists, seers, deists, and the like. Dragons may be born into this class, or build to it on their own merits. This is the first rank of dragon eligible to be granted a mate by the Drake or Sovereign.

Wyrm of Foundling Order
Typically dragons who came to the clan as hatchlings or young dragons with little to no social bearing. Dragons in this class often become apprenticed to dragons of higher orders, or seek to begin their training for the trials held by the protectorate.

Wyrm of Austere Order
The lower caste of dragons, they possess some social standing within the clan, but not any of great repute. This is sometimes by choice, but more often enforced with tooth and claw. They are referred to as the “Scaleless.” It is not a term used in polite company. Many dragons who were kin or friend to the lord before, find themselves reduced to this social standing upon the takeover of a new Drake.

Wyrm of Bonded/Third Order
Typically dragons who have been born into or pressed into servitude for the clan, mostly the work of Burg and his caravan. Slavery is not permitted, but this is as close as it is allowed in the society. A dragon can find release from his contract via great deed for the clan, accumulation of wealth or social influence, or via the direct word of the Drake or Sovereign. Bonded dragons are not eligible to engage in the ROAR within the Wyrm Order.

Practices and the Impractical

Right of All Rocks

The ROAR is the way upon which the members of the clan dictate their views to one and other and is often used as a way to settle disputes. Dragons are each represented by a unique stone, which they often select and polish themselves as hatchlings. No two are alike. It serves as the physical representation of themselves to the clan, in a similar fashion as a signature would on a legal document. When a ROAR is called, dragons of the clan can cast their judgement on the situation by placing their stone in favor or against. Once the stones have been cast the Aggregate of the clan is called to cast the stones, and speak the result. This is a rudimentary judgement system for a world typically ran in the feral ways of dragons.

LORE

The Founding of the Breathing Roots.
Pt. I

A small chirp sounded and a shadow fell heavily from the heavy shroud of night landing desperately upon the heaving visage the victor, the lord of breath, the great wyrm. The flying shadow clung to him viciously, chirping frantically into his mane. She was his mate, given to him by the lord before, and was the first to honor him. He could refuse her now, as was his right, but the roar which slowly rumbled from deep within him was one of triumph and acceptance. Acceptance of his mate, acceptance of his right, and trumpeting his triumph into the world. *He* was the Drake of Breathing Roots, and all wyrms within its grasp were his.

The battle had felled trees, torn them asunder by their roots, and ripped into the heart of the swamp like a borer. The silt would swirl with tendrils of acrid redness for days, if not weeks to come. The trees would never again grow here, on this a battlefield of impurity, and all beings of the earth would know it. The lord before had fought with the abandon of one who has all to lose, but his usurper had defeated him with the vigor of one who has all to gain.

The body of the fallen twitched for the final time, and it was truly done. The drake and his queen turned and together they left for a sanctuary known only to them, and from the shadows emerged the wyrms of the Breathing Roots to claim their right, the lord before was theirs now, and his rule had not been one of ease nor of gentleness. Their collective revenge, given only in death, would be the same. He was denied a final flight into the heavens, into the arms of his Flamecaller, and was consumed by even the lowest of those who had once belonged beneath his talons. The songs of the swamp inhabitants slowly came back into life, as he was erased from the world, bones and all.

Before the first light of dawn, the world of the mangrove sanctuary had been restored, its heart beating to a new, stronger, pulsating rhythm. The frogs sang late into the morning, the buzz of insects hummed louder, and to many the world was alight with the rays of a new sun. Great land wyrms stayed above the comfort of their hollows to bask in its warmth, and even the lovers of shadow and darkness roosted beneath tendrils of light which shone through even the densest of leaf cover. An era had come to an end, and one had begun anew.

Opening Lore

Far south of the decrepit ruin of the great sundial, if one were to take wing and fly west, feeling the morning’s first rays warming ones’ back, one would come to a river lit with midday sun. One should rest, for the journey is often the true destination, and the river is cool and crisp. The Lightweaver blesses all who take refreshment here, or so say the old ways. Taking care after one’s respite to avoid the crumbling embankment, lest one wishes for a bath, take flight once more and circle seeking the outlines of crumbling limestone, flying close, it will be the Hewn City one has found.

Fly high and seek the brightest hue of cream, stone bleached near white by the Lightweaver, for there lies a ruin. This ruin lies lower than the surrounding plain, and is the landmark which tells of a hidden water forest, which lies undisturbed beyond. Trees here are greater at the root than at the branches, and the region is ripe with life of flora and fauna. Estuaries feed the land from both sea and river, making it rich and ripe, a bountiful mother of lands. Great clouds of water birds will squawk and flee at the sight of you, but do not be surprised if others yawn and rest, as many who dwell here are quite used to the presence of dragon kind.

If you tread in, beware your footing for it can be treacherous. Bogland and marsh border the richness of the mangrove forest, and keep out many who would wish ill upon the oasis within. Floating mats of decaying wetness float atop unseen sources, making each step an unsteady calculation. Beware the sleeping bogsneak most of all, for they have ferocious temperaments! One should carefully for puffs of steam which rise above the ground, for it is likely a bogsneak sleeps warmly below!

Once one arrives, one must know that one is now a guest of the dragons of Breathing Roots. It was that the mangrove born drake, Pieris, outwitted the flame touched drake, Olivius, to claim the lair of Breathing Roots. One must quickly seek the one of maize and heather, for he and the great mangrove drake are as clutch mates, one favors the others guidance. Move quickly, for if found by the others of this place, one may not be as safe as the tranquil waters have deceived. Welcome to Breathing Roots, traveler.
