The nocturne giving the lecture captivated Vera. Her notebook sat empty and forgotten before her, the pages empty of the notes that fluttered and filled her mind. She thought of the materials that passed through the marketplace and wondered what the glimmering speaker had seen. How were materials different fresh? Did it make a difference? So caught up in her questions was she that Vera met the Nocturne at the door to ask, forgetting entirely to burn with embarrassment of ignorance.

For once, Vera’s work was wondered at. Dior lay the wing drape before her and asked about the choice of joining clasp. Vera explained about her neighbor’s scale disorder and the necessity of a simpler clasp, easy for shaking hands. Dior asked smart questions, and praised Vera’s handiwork anyway. A hot drink and a quiet corner to talk was suggested, and somehow a pattern developed. It was weeks later, when Dior mentioned that she had another lecture scheduled and that she must be on the road that Vera realized that the nocturne would take Vera’s heart with her when she went. “Come with me.” Dior had asked, and it was so.
