ARSENIC
"At your command."

“Wing Rot is a disease not readily understood by the healers of Sornieth. Originally documented in the Southern Icefields within centaur herds in the Cloudscrape foothills, it was created as a biological weapon by naturalists and mages concerned over the loss of their ancestral territory. Nurtured within dragon corpses and enhanced with Beast Clan magics, it was typically utilized against encroaching Ice clans in the form of fragile, glass bottles attached to archer arrows that would shatter on impact. Some centaur herds with skilled apothecaries managed to distill the blood of infected dragons into a poison with which they’d coat their blades and projectiles.

“The results on an afflicted dragon are devastating. Initial symptoms include a hacking cough, fluid build-up in the lungs, and bruising. In time, scales become discolored as the flesh beneath begins to corrode. Splotching on the tongue and bleeding from the gums, nose, and ears are noted. This worsens as the dragon begins to rot alive, with individuals often leaking pus, oils, and other fluids associated with decomposition. Teeth and horns may be shed. The mouth bleeds frequently and becomes ashy gray or black. Insects begin to swarm the subject, attracted to what the perceive as a meal, and may begin to eat the host alive.

“As horrific as it sounds and as deadly as it seems, dragons of the Scarred Wasteland--having realized that this contagion has begun to spread across Sornieth as a whole--have come up with ways to control or even harness the disease in a way that makes the host stronger. Those suffering from Wing Rot are often brought by friends or family to Plague clans who teach them to manage their illness, and there are countless dragons afflicted with Wing Rot who have learned to use it to bolster their own abilities, or even weaponize it to use against the Beast Clans themselves. To the Plaguelings, the irony of reversing a Beast-made disease to help the host and hurt the creator is not lost on them.

“They deem it their Mother’s will. She does not think kindly of those who play god.”

-- Medical Anomalies, Volume II, Chapter XXX

"Don’t. Just don’t. Trust me, you don’t want to get on her bad side. And that’s not a slight against you because, well, you look like you can take care of yourself, but I’m speaking from experience. She hits hard, she plays rough, and she’s… she’s just gross. Slimy, diseased. You know the drill.

“Her personality isn’t stellar, either. If she’s not down, she’s angry, and if she’s not angry, she’s down. She’s not much of a conversationalist, and there’s too many ‘touchy’ subjects you don’t want to bring up around her. I mean, look at all the Loss Gems she’s wearing. The Incident was not kind to her and asking about her family is a surefire way to end up dead in a ditch somewhere. Just… just don’t. Take my word for it. Don’t.”

HISTORY
Arsenic was born on the Cloudscrape Crags, the once beautiful daughter to a noble Ice-born family. The problem was that her clan came into conflict with the centaur clans living in the foothills below their lair, which led to the centaurs--grossly overpowered and outnumbered--to resort to more insidious methods of warfare. In desperation, they sought to develop a way to level the playing field and make their draconic foes weak enough to drive out of their territory. The idea they came up with was vicious indeed.

While they probably stole the strain from plagueland Serthis, they let loose on Arsenic and her family with a horrendous disease known only as “Wing Rot.” It decimated her family, drove off her mate, and left her crippled and malformed. Her carefree nature withered as she was outcast from those who had not yet fallen ill, as she was punished only for her loyalty to her family and her refusal to leave them in such dire times. Her devotion to The Icewarden waned, her spirit was broken, her trust in her fellow dragons destroyed.

This turned her to worship of the Plaguebringer, who she felt could teach her to control her ailment. And, indeed, after conversion, Arsenic thrived. The oozing rot that once coated her slimy scales has hardened into a stone-like armor, and the flesh-eating insects attracted to her stench can be controlled as destructive swarms. She’s a force to be contended with, powerful and contagious, and rightfully feared by her lessers.

During The Flauros Incident, she lost much of her family, including her mate, eldest daughter, and grandson. This has dampened her temper and, though she’s still fierce by any estimation, she struggles to find a remnant of her old carefree self, trying to fill the void with whatever friendships she can scrape together. She has even forgiven Flauros, who she realizes is equally lost in the aftermath and perhaps the greatest victim in the whole ordeal, and takes her on hunts and to skirmishes to help her learn to be “normal.”

VISTHAISA
A… gift to Arsenic from Vistha-Yar, the Serthis champion of The Aimless tribe that lives out of Omen, it’s said that Yar caught this monstrosity during a rite of passage in his youth. More likely, he stole an egg thinking it was a dragon egg and, surprise! It very much… wasn’t. Arsenic is pretty sure he gave it to her so that it wouldn’t be his problem anymore, but joke’s on him. She loves it.

Visthaisa is a spirited hydra with a curiosity and playfulness that most hydras lack. While equally ferocious and fearsome, much of its destructive tendencies can be tempered by finding outlets for its energy. As such, Arsenic typically brings it with her on hunts, allowing it to slither, pounce, explore, and play with its food. Perhaps to the common laydragon, it's a horrendous sight to watch an Imperial and a hydra bat around a grown elk carcass like it's a cat playing with a ball of string, but it's either the elk or one of the Tundra in Irthskaar. Arsenic thinks she's picked the more acceptable option.
