______ A Member of the Human Council, Athus is a man of few words and many thoughts. He is an expert at listening, and pays attention to rumour and the talk of the streets while the rest of the Council scorns it. He occupies his time with arcane study; while not being a Mage himself, he believes in the depth and uses of magic and runes.

______ While few things are directly attributed to him, and he passes few laws, he is covertly responsible for many goings-on – a hint here, an idea there, and what he wants to happen is put into motion by someone else. He is known to be the mind behind such happenings as Marking, the process of binding a person to a person of choice, allowing them to see wherever they are in the Archipelago, and control any magic they try to use. He also suggested and researched the process of Purging, the purging of all will and soul from a being, creating a slave with no intent but to follow every order.

______ He is the only Council member concerned with the whispers of the Shadows that Breathe, and is known to take an interest in Shadow Magic, perhaps in the way of research, or perhaps for a more personal reason. He works closely with his second, Hythen “the Lizard” Maraver, and is one of the only Council members to have a second, especially one with which he shares his plans and secrets. He wears a cloak and hood, hiding his features, and rarely speaks in the Council Chamber.

B I O G R A P H Y

______ Unlike many other members of the Council, he is not unreasonable, and will listen to both sides of everything, if only to gain a better knowledge of how to take advantage of the situation. He never acts without thinking it through, and every move he makes is to further his own ends, whether or not it helps anyone else. He comes across as level-headed and reasonable, although dismissive of pain and other matters, which is where Hythen picks up the slack.

______ He spends most of his time in his library, researching and studying magic and runes, and occasionally experimenting with the latter. He has been known to use any subtle matters available to him to resolve or prevent situations, including drugging, although he never kills anyone. Instead, he plants the idea in someone else's mind, through whispers or writing in the margin of a book he knows they'll read, and lets them do with it what they will.

______ Athus is one of the most neutral members of the Council, keeping his stance on power in the middle area without taking a side.. He has no ambitions to rise in power and stance within the Council, instead turning his focus outward, and to other things. He is arguably one of the Council members with the most covert influence, and as little overt influence as he can manage to have, preferring to keep his dealings in the dark.

⚕ The Lizard ⚕

Hythen "the Lizard" Maraver, Second to Athus of the Council, is a wraith with human form, his soul made up of pieces Athus dragged back from the dead and wove together into undead form. Lizard and Athus used to be partners, but after his death Lizard lost a lot of his memory, leaving him unable to remember any of their time together. Athus, having been previously closeted, was unable to tell Lizard of their past for fear of being thrown off the Council for partnering with a half-breed. As a result, Lizard met another partner, and adopted children, unaware of their past.

'Lizard' is a name adopted from rumour and muttered jokes, as Athus has always worked closely with Hythen. It became common to call the pair 'the Lizard and the Snake' and contemplate when the latter would turn on the former and devour him too someday. Athus took to calling him Lizard affectionately, and the name stuck, even through his death.

Hythen's death was brought about by the rebel Eirach, who was commissioned to target Athus' closest known bond and take him down. The murder was brutal and bloody, occuring in a backstreet of Colsar, and the body was found seconds after death by Athus, who in panic tried to drag his soul back from the dead. He was only partially successful, leaving Hythen fragmented and lacking important memories and sometimes emotions. Despite this, he endeavors to lead a normal life as a human, having a family and a home, and working with Athus, mostly ignoring his predicament.
